I picked the bike up with no downpipes, so ordered a new set on line, which have come in good time, all nice and shiny!
However, the left hand down pipe seems to be about 2 inches shorted than the right hand downpipe....

I have tried to see if the exhaust fits, but it defionately seems to be too short. The place I bought the pipes from insist that this size is correct, but I am choosing to distrust them and thought you guys may be able to help???

Cheers,

Andy

Mine are not perfectly the same length, but more importantly mine are long enough to allow the mufflers to slide on and clamp properly.

This one doesnt even come close to making it to the silencer! a good couple of inches short! :(

If the vendor doesn't make it right feel free to let us know who it is.

Ugh, Swooheroo,
Welcome to a real man's motorcycle, must be tough emotionally
with a thick wallet and time to spare on delay after delay.

Besides your obvious length error, the angle of the header
dangle out of head varies a lot so often so don't line up to
silencers to clear stuff, ugh.

Last set I got for factory Trixie Combat were form hi end
famous vendor specializing in Commando headers,
Pricey!
LH header would not even fit in head, over sized
end I had to bite bullet and grind scary amount off
header and inside of brass retaining ring bolt 'nut'.
Forget name of vendor right now but he got serious
sick about this time and dropped out of contact
for couple years.

In general the best fitting headers may still need swift
kicks [cold] to align well enough all the way back.
I've yet to hear of a way to determine your luck
of the draw before mis fits arrive to surprise ya.

There is a photo some where that shows two sets
of headers, each with obviously differing angles
into head.

If I ever get another I'd pay $6000 or so for a fully fettered
bargain basement Commando and get my road joy
thrills w/o ongoing drainage of funds and invervals
testing my competence and sanity reserves.

A lot of assumptions at the end of that paragraph/sentence.

Yes so it would seem on first read by novice Commando-neer.
Keep it in mind when you view the wonders other produce
and eventually your own. Creating your own fully fettered
Commando really means something, I'm still not there
a decade + on two Cdo's.

If you've a lust for EXtreme cornering loads, what ever
you do DO NOT install a Bob Patton style rear iso linkage.
You see what it did to me and what others think of me here.
But its more than worth to me for the faces I see on
sports bikers spanked so easy its not even close to
neck and neck contests. It more than worth it to
me to far exceed that to really have my way with Peel.

To keep some toes touching to normal, Trixie Combat
will get nothing but what can be ordered out of the
Factory Goods Book. She was $3500 un re-stored
running bargain but had lurking time bombs inside
that required a few extra $1000's to recover,
so easy over $7000 total so far. Be prepared or quit it now.

The important thing is, Is the shorter one long enough to comprise the first part of a proper-length system? If so, cut the long one off. If not, the seller need to make you whole-either a refund for return or send the correct length pipe(s) in exchange. What's the rotter's name? We'll blare it all over the innertube.

Cutting headers may be simple for any other breed, but
the Commando system has set mounting and attachment points
with little fudge slack. Of if too long then slice er off.
I'd suspect about half the time
the header clamp into silencer is a sliding one, no matter how
crimped tight ya try. Send wrong pipe back for another lottery
order.
Hmm, maybe there's a spring binder in Peels future.

Andy - Sadly mate, I think you have been ripped off. Did you get this rubbish off EBay? A business called Trojan? If so you've been duded by a clown who knows next to nothing about Commandos. I'm building a '71 750 for a mate and he got the right hand pipe that has the early tuck in and the left hand layer type that angles out. This was immediately obvious, possibly just a packing error. Nope, the vendor insists its all genuine and correct as designed and made by Norton!

I just measured two know good 750 headers - 37.5"
That sticks them about 1 inch or more into the silencer

Yet to hear back, but if I get no joy, I'll be sure to let you know!

hee hee

At least you didn't get TWO RIGHT-SIDE pipes!

A friend of mine thought he'd try his luck ordering a "great deal" from Marshall Hagy (British Parts Chicago, and several other aliases) of Chicago infamy. The results are the above scenario. He wouldn't make it right, either.

My friend gave me the pipes after I ordered him a proper set. I had a muffler shop cut and re-weld it into the proper shape to use as a left side pipe, and put it on a rolling basket case to at least have SOMETHING on it to be test-fired. It actually looked presentable, and would have been fine with some grinding and a re-chrome.
