Hi everyone please do not dismiss me out of hand for owning a bitsa (Triton) and coming to your pure breeds for advice, I am having terrible problems fitting the centre stand on my Triton I have all the correct fittings but cannot work out where to place the the top spring fitting, the original fitting on the bike is on the the engine/g/box plate just behind the cylinder and the spring will make it to the top rung on the stand but does not hold it up ? it seems to me it is to far forward. what I would really appreciate is a few pics of a standard slimline dommie showing where the top spring hanger should be located and also some measurements from some points on the frame so I can replicate it as near as possible many thanks Chris

Hello,

When I built my Slimline racer with a tilted Commando engine, I had a problem similar to yours and I simply drilled another hole through the gearbox holding plate, a bit to the rear and lower from the original if my memory serves me well!

That sounds about right but the placing on the old plates is definitely wrong and as they will be new plates I do not want to be drilling them anywhere but the right place

I am going to attempt to upload some pics so you can see what I am talking about the current position on the old plates is definitely wrong the spring (new) will only reach the upper crossbar and the stand is not held up it is staying there because it is tight in the new fittings

Having just looked at the diagram mentioned earlier it obviously goes on the top rung across the stand and it looks like I need to move the top spring hanger further back on the bike but I need to know where I think I will try and get hold of a dommie engine plate then should be able to get it exact measurements would still be good thanks Chris

Hang on ..... when I get to my shop later this am, I will get you some measurements.

Here is a pic of the spring top on an Atlas.

The spring eye fits over a stud on the inboard side of the left engine/gearbox plate. The center of the stud is 3-5/8 inches from the upper sideplate mounting hole in the tab on the crosstube above the swingarm spindle. It is about 3/8 inches lower than the above referenced hole (that hole is No 4 in the next pic).

I think call out numbers 85 & 86 are the spring fixing stud (hard to tell in the pic ... see the diagram I gave you in the earlier post).

Just been down to the bike and as I thiught the spring is pulling to the front of the bike and needs to come back your measurements should get me as near as damn it thanks a lot you have been a great help Chris

Mine mounts vertically in front of the gearbox. Looks like you have an existing hole for the bolt.
Here's mine:

The difference between Mark's spring and mine is (aside from Mark's being prettier):

Mark's stand is retracted, mine is down.

Here's a pic showing my spring when the stand is down. It's not the best view but you get an idea of the angle.
Similar to Slick's

Isn't this the mounting hole you should be using?…
No, I think it's the one, on the picture, on the right of the gearbox mounting slot.

I have put it in the one Fritz mentioned and I can move it up with my finger with the spring on I think I might try a trampoline spring as I just do not trust the prop stand and it is not ideal for starting either, the one your arrow is pointing at is a reflection of the flash on some new shiny chrome on the shelf

What's the overall length of your spring or between the eyes?
The one I have is 21cm overall, 18.5 from middle to middle of the eyes and I think it's genuine.
Why not move the the plate where your spring actually is hooked up to the hole I've mentioned?

I will go out tomorrow and measure it I need to get it right before I order new plates for my triumph box but I am pretty sure they do not come with the hole pre drilled if anyone in the uk has a drive side engine plate they would be prepared to loan me I would pay all postage and leave a substantial deposit probably a week 10 days max, please please!!!!! many thanks Chris
