Dominator Kickstand WTH?

Hi everyone. New to this forum. Not new to motorcycles but very new to Norton motorcycles. I just picked up my Dominator on Tuesday and was wondering if anyone else found the kickstand on this thing to be ridiculous and slightly horrifying? I have to lean the bike uncomfortably far to the right to get the kickstand up or down. The position the bike is in when on the stand is the truly terrifying part. It's literally straight up. Feels like a mild breeze could knock it over. Uneven parking plus straight up bike on kickstand could lead to a very expensive disaster. Also it's difficult for me to get to the kickstand in either position as I have little feet and only a 32" inseam. I'm having a new kickstand fabricated to address these issues but until it's ready I was hoping some of you might tell me what you have done to address these issues or if it's just a weird thing with my bike.

Wren,

Welcome to the forum.
Sounds like the same problem the Commands had.
Norton subsequently introduced a new side stand that was 10mm shorter to correct the problem.

I’m sure a Dominator owner will respond to your thread shortly.

Thank you BritTwit. It's comforting to know it's not just my bike.

Did you adjust the rear end ride height down on the bike?
Doing this could also cause the bike to sit up more vertical on the side stand.

Haven't changed a thing on it yet. I have an appointment with my suspension guy to get the bike dialed in next week.

The kickstand issue is way worse on DOMI than Commando. The DOMI, you have to tip the bike the opposite way to fold/un-fold it. It is scary. But honestly, you do get used to it a bit. Be aware that when working or cleaning the bike wants to tip over very easily. SO BE WARNED.

We are customizing a stand here in Canada for a guy. But with only 5 or so bikes out that people will actually ride. We will not be making stands.

Thank you for the reply richard-7. My guys are custom fabricating a stand for me too. It's especially disconcerting as I'm not very big and having to lean the bike so far over to the right to get the kickstand on the left up or down. Also just the thought of parking it anywhere that's not perfectly flat is terrifying.

The stand is a bit of a worry. At 6ft 2in I've never noticed a problem putting it down or up. But I definitely worry about the bike falling over when on it. If you rock the bike you really feel the tipping point is uncomfortably close. My other bikes feel very solid in comparison.

Thank you for the reply iwilson. You are substantially taller than me. Close to nine inches taller. Trust me, leaning the bike so far in the opposite direction at my height is pretty disconcerting.

I had to get Norton on board to send me the right kickstand on my Commando. I had the UK stand and it was almost damn near upright! I was scared to death and actually caught the bike mid-fall one time? It was horrifying. I got the new kickstand for the US and it looks like they took about 1/4" out. It's still taller than I prefer, but better than the UK stand. You might want to check and see if they have another stand, but it sounds like that isn't the whole issue?

I am 5 11 and find there Dommie stand a nightmare. Leaning it over the wrong way whilst on the bike and then finding the stand itself has presented me with more than one or two problems especially when fully loaded for a trip. I would like to see some form of extension to the stand itself so that locating it easier. Something for me to do this winter!

I most likely have the shorter version on my 2015 Sport. Personally, I think it's perfect. I'm not tall - just careful. :) I love that it sits more upright than normal. I am constantly propping up my other bikes so they stand straighter, especially while two of them are stored inside a 12x10 shed. It makes it a lot easier to move around inside. For parking on softer ground, too - it doesn't sink in as far.

GLB; I hear you. I'm only 5'5" with a 32" inseam further exacerbated by having tiny feet that can barely reach the stand in the up or down position. I figure if I can flat foot it on both sides of a bike I shouldn't have any problems with the kickstand. I figured wrong. lol

Contours; The problem with the Dominator stand isn't that it sits up straighter it's that it sits completely straight up. No lean at all. None. Not safe at all unless parking on a completely level surface. Might be less dangerous parked in a perfectly level garage or shed but I need to be able to park my bike out in the world too where perfectly level parking surfaces are far and few between especially on twisty mountain roads. And because the stand is so long one has to lean the bike uncomfortably far to the right to get the stand up or down.

SkeletonCycles; Yeah I noticed some of the commandos have better stands than others. None as bad as the Dominator stand but still not fun.

My custom fabricated stand is being powder coated this weekend so hopefully I should have it in the next few days.
