Yes, it was in fact, called the John Player paint scheme. Or as the Brits might say, it was done in "John Player livery"

I have never seen the Red / White / Blue scheme referred to in factory literature as a John Player scheme, although I think that everybody always assumed that. In the 1975 UK Mk111 brochure, it is simply referred to as "Navy stripe on white".

Strangely, the design first featured in the 1974 Mk11 brochures which were seperately photographed for the UK and US markets (with and without "blackcaps") It was then referred to as "New first time Blue Stripe finish" and, in both pictures, both the thick and the thin line are blue (no red) which doesn't follow the John Player reasoning.

The '74 catalogue includes the "actual" John Player replicas and the UK one shows a bike with the later sweeping stripes and no mirrors whereas the US version has the plain horizontal lines.

These are the 1974 catalogue illustrations showing the "Blue Stripe" finish as it first appeared.

Apologies that ImageShack has compressed them a lot.
