Not since the three phase alternator and the AGM battery. They never need it. Jim

I ride my Norton 6 days out of 7, run a Joe Hunt maggie and the best thing I don't run a battery at all, run a battery eleminator to run my lights and brake light, no more worries about flat batteries :D

I tried that here once when I was licensing a dirt bike. They made me install a battery because "the lights need to work without the engine running". Of course I know others who have gotten through the inspection with no battery. Jim

I have a 200 watt stator, a matching Podtronic unit and a 12ah agm battery(XTA14AHL-BS). No charging needed ever, even after sitting all winter. (store battery inside) I could have put a trickle on it but it just didn't need it. 12.5 after sitting 4 months.

The Zener shouldn't trip till 14 volts plus...

According to the Zener test data in both the Norton factory manuals and Lucas Service manuals, the Zener begins to operate above 12.75 Volts, the current flow increasing as the voltage rises to a level of 2A at between 13.5-15.5V therefore it should be disconnected (easiest is to remove the main fuse) when battery charging or the battery may not become fully charged.

My Deltran Battery Tender model # 021-0123 would NOT charge my battery in the bike with everything connected as normal. I had to isolate the battery from the harness to get it to work.

Not for the Norton because it doesn't seem to need it but I do have to for the '08 Honda; the new stuff seems to have small draws that the old stuff doesn't.

well, i did not disconnect the zener diode.
the battery is new but it did take at least a day for the green light on the charger to illuminate.
is this because the diode wars in the circuit?
