Any help on which disposable gloves to buy? They all either last an hour or tougher ones seem impossible to allow you to pick up small items.

All of the nitrile, vinyl or vinitrile gloves are one use only and will easily rip once you show them a part of a motorcycle.

‘Mechanics’ gloves are multi use and very durable, but of course are thicker and less dexterous.

I chop and change between the 2 types depending on what I’m doing, but if it’s a quick and simple thing then often nothing at all, but I’m prepared for the need for a hand degreaser soon after.

I use those rubber faced textile ‘mechanics’ gloves commonly found at Halfords etc for ‘robust‘ work and the disposal gloves pictured below for ‘fine’ work.

Exactly how ‘rip resistant’ they are in reality varies depending on what chemicals they’re exposed to… which is a sobering thought about what effect those same chemicals would have if in contact with one’s skin.

For years I thought ‘I can’t work in gloves’ but when you get used to it, you feel naked and vulnerable without.

When I was a teenager you could tell a fellow rocker, greaser , greabo by the oil under his finger nails. :)

I've been wondering why all the UK mechanics I see on YouTube wear protective gloves, but USA mechanics all seem to wear caps instead?

I use disposable 3mm nitrile gloves for really messy jobs like oil changes, and palm coated gloves for everyday mechanicing. The disposables last up to a day, and cost 25p/pr, the more substantial nitrile coated gloves are about £1.50 from Screwfix

I used to feel the same way about ear plugs. Now I wouldn’t go out of the driveway without them.Plus the bike runs better with them on!😁

It was said that Valentino Rossi insisted on silencers on his Honda when their use was not required as he could hear the engine better. He was quite a good rider I believe ;)

Thickness has a direct correlation to durability. 3 mil are one and done. I can get 2-3 uses out of 7 mil. 5 mil are a durable one and done.

Petroleum products are supposedly a carcinogen. But so is everything else

i use nitrile black workshop gloves, been wearing them for so long i forget I'm waring them, they don't last that long but it save s greasy mits

Thanks for your responses. I shall now dip my hands in latex paint, let it dry and then have at the Norton.

What I use for last several yrs , deer leather unlined ( tough, good feel ) I get half dozen uses out of the nitrile (8mm) usually fail from a cut into tear , chemicals are no issue … $10 for 25 pair

I have big hands and have difficulty finding gloves that fit. I don't like dirty hands. A few years ago, I quit wearing gloves and started using this: Amazon product ASIN B00022W4ZU
No matter how greasy and grimy my hands come clean and the skin on my hands is much better than when I wore gloves.

Part of the glove thing is you really dont want the dermal attack you get from petrochems etc.
And dirty hands is no longer manly it is stupid. Times change sometimes for the better.
...and if you are raiding the cookie jar behind the old lady's back you don't want to leave any prints!

What a bunch of girls, gloves to work on your bikes, if you get oil on your hands you wash them straight away, good workshop hand cleaner and workshop rages, love them blue workshop towels, I don't soak my hands in oiland if I get a little oil on my fingers when dropping the sump plug I wipe then wash straight away.
Working in a maintenance workshop and using machinery gloves can be dangerous as well here in Aussie you get girls nick name if you wore gloves, well except if welding.
Only joking if you want soft hands then all good but nothing wrong with dirty hands and crap under your nails just show you do work.
Don't get all worked up if I offend you because you want soft hands, it's the Aussie way to sh.t stir everyone, aswell I never wear gloves when riding, 50 years of riding I still have all my fingers, how can you pick your nose with gloves on.

But Ashley, until you’ve experienced our younger looking and baby soft skin, you don’t know what you’re missing mate…

Fair enough, I simply don't ride without gloves.
Many years ago in South Africa, it was a really & warm humid day and I left the gloves in my pocket. Dumped the Ducati on a bit of gravel (!!) going quite slowly, and landed on my hands.
I was looking at the bone on several finger tips, most of the remaining were sans skin. It's amazing how many nerve ends finger tips have....

Actually, it took several years before I regained proper fingerprint lines on the tips, made doing ID checks interesting for a while.

Yes for some this is OK ... but after years in the HGV repair environment without wearing gloves (because there just weren't any of the modern Nitrile variety) i acquired a skin allergy so was forced to wear them or give up my trade
