I've tried to determine from photos and other forum postings but can someone clarify when Norton started installing disc brakes. It seems like I read that on the combat engine equipped models, they got the front disc brake, but other models like my Hi-Rider got the drum. And somewhat later, all models got discs. Can someone set me straight.

72 was the first year for disc's and then only when the Combat engine was fitted, they were linked options so order one and it came with both. 73 was 100% disc but Hi Rider may have still kept the drum, AN have the drum on the 73 parts page. All 74 onwards was 100% disc. Production racers would have had disc brakes before 72.
Were the '74 onward bikes front disc only, or front and rear?

The Production Race bikes had disk brakes much earlier. You could purchase the assembly from parts.

The earliest Commando Production Racers did come with the drum front brake. Cycle World tested one for it's December 1969 issue.
By the time they began offering them in the US (1970, I think), they appear to have changed to the Norvil front disk brake.
Ccle magazine tested one of them in their January 1971 issue.
