Hi All

I'm converting Swampy to a disk front brake. I've collected all the parts and am just changing the wheel bearings in the second hand front hub. On taking off the bearing lock ring (part no 060363) I found it had a right hand thread. The manual (1970 model models onwards, part no 063419) says it should be a left had thread. Looking in another manual with no part number it says its a right hand thread! The hub has not been bodged or altered and it all looks standard.
So the question is did Norton change from a left hand thread to a right hand thread or were they always right hand thread and the manual is wrong?

In my 065146 copy of the factory manual 850 & 750 '70-on, it says in section H7, DISMANTLING FRONT HUB, DISC TYPE "Unscrew the bearing locking ring (right-hand thread)"

I don't think it was ever left hand thread as there would have been a different set of part numbers for the hub and ring, and a locking ring on the left side of a wheel would usually have a normal right hand thread and a right side locking ring would be left hand thread, so the normal rotation of the wheel prevents the ring from unscrewing if it becomes loose. The 'reversed' 850 MkIII hub has a bearing retaining circlip and not a threaded ring.

Are you sure you are not looking at the section for the REAR wheel?

Ron - the titel of the section in tne manual is 'Section H7 Dismantling the front hub, disc type' so pretty sure its not refering to the rear hub :)
Part numbers for the locking ring (060363) doesn't change from 72 to 74 so my conclusion is that the manual is wrong!

That's not entirely unusual, as the factory information was sometimes wrong and that error had obviously been corrected in the later 750-850 manual. For instance, there are at least two versions of 850 MkIII manual, my Kim CD copy 00-4224 MkIII factory manual says the rear wheel locking ring is "LEFT HAND THREAD" which is wrong, however, my paper copy of the same 00-4224 manual factory manual says "RIGHT HAND THREAD"!

I don't know, given up on the Hi-rider look already and now you want her to stop

Matt, I just was looking at the CD version of the manual and saw the left hand warning for the rear wheel and clearly right hand thread for the front. That's why I wondered if you were looking at the wrong section.

Tonight, I pulled my old hard copy out that I bought in 1973 but rarely use as the pages are getting brittle. Lo and behold, the exact same statement you found!! All these years and I guess I never bothered to read that. (It's a good thing I didn't!)

As Les says, the manuals were often corrected on later publications. The important part is we all now know it is RIGHT hand thread regardless of what the manual says.
