And the several times over the years that I've dropped the bike on the left side, the foot peg snapped off and the foot peg nut dinged the primary cover. The 3 footrest fixing studs did not budge.
The speculation was not whether the 18 tpi in the aluminum were or were not appropriate. It was why they didn't use a bolt to go into the aluminum instead of a stud in the first place. I thought perhaps so it could be tightened with 24 tpi steel on steel rather than with 18 tpi steel on aluminum. After reviewing maylar's post I concluded it was probably for ease of assembly rather than for mechanical/metalurgical reasons. Didn't mean for the long post to be so off-putting. I was just trying to think it all through. In future I'll keep things short and more in the form of questions rather than speculative "possibilities."

Probably because the footrest has to be removed periodically to allow access to the primary case.

Removing and replacing bolts every time would wear the alloy.

Its probably a great place ...but I'll always remember Billy Joel singing about it
It's like the south side of Pittsburgh. When the mills were in full operation you could stand up on Mt. Washington at night on Grand View Avenue and look up the Monongahela and watch the fire belch out of the furnaces reflecting off the blackness of the waters. You might complain, but there were so many jobs and Pittsburgh had a bustleing economy it hardly matches even to this day. And what I said about Pittsburgh goes as much for Allentown -- before the great shutdown. Billy Joel wrote a song about it. I was never a great fan, but that song spoke true.

Mack trucks. Badder than badass. Once upon a time.
Sorry.
They must still make Macks, but does Mack still make engines? Wide wide torque band even for big power. 5 speeds. Mine was a Detroit Diesel. A two stroke. Revved like an old time fuel injected vette. 13 speed. A little like the difference between a Norton and one of the imports back in the day.
