What caused this clutch center to wear like this? 1974 model.

Here's the mainshaft
Diagnose this clutch center......

Lack of lube on shaft, too many standing starts form the traffic lights Grand Prix, carrying an overweight passenger , general wear and tear, take your pick.

I can't say for sure, but probably it was a poor fit to begin with and/or run somewhat loose for an extended time.

Either way a new shaft and center is in order. Don't forget seals, bushings and bearings. Clutch plates too.

Shouldn't the splines on the mainshaft seat flush with the grooves in the clutch centre? It was never properly installed.

Beside loose center nut &/or circlip over whelmed &/or Hooligain shock loads, its also possible there was one too many over tight primary chain events and its bent shafts into a slight candy cane spiral that beats snot out of interfaces. Check that please so we might learn form your ugly shaft splines. My favorite pet peeve in AMC's are the sleeve and 1st gear bushes wearing out to let shafts and clutch basket off center wobble to destruction before their time.

Amen!
Along with chocolate cams, rocker spindles and 'A' model 2nd gear pairs - '74 was a good year
I wonder if the heat treatment guys had been having too many siestas that year?

I did alot of street racing back in the day, guess I abused the poor thing, but back then it seemed indestructible! My friends Harleys and Triumphs kept breaking down, things vibrating loose, but my Norton was the scoot that made all the long trips, reliable, got the parts for the ones who broke down, and was the fastest of the bunch. Until somebody bought a Kawasaki 900. It was faster, but since it was Japanese, it wasn't cool.

I wish I had taken more picks tearing it down, I won't make that mistake again.

The clutch nut was finger tight I remember, even though the tabs were in place.

I didn't carry alot of fat girls. Some were big.

I was meticulous about changing and checking fluids.

The last years involved tons of city driving in Las Vegas.... very, very hot.

Maybe it was soft, here's the outside:

I won't blame the big girls, one in particular got me out of a ticket because of her tube top.

Tube Tops! There are a lot of 70s styles that can stay in the closet, but that and the mini skirt are timeless!

Oh, and about the clutch center. I don't have a clue.

Hehe, can't forget the short shorts appearance either, ugh or Twiggy in them.
