On my '71, the tops of the stems dimpled, or had a low spot, such that a feeler gauge would bridge across it and you had to guess at the clearance by how many thread turns from zero you had. Not a good situation as that rough hole would tear up new adjusters.
 
Seems like thread pitch would be pretty accurate, maybe more so that a feeler guage. Not that I have tried it yet, but I am sure I will. :lol:
