Dave Taylor unit woes....

Why on Earth does anybody invent a good design, such as these headsteadies, then bollocks it up with crap manufacturing, or purposely design a flaw in it so it can't be fitted.
It took me 3 evenings of careful filing to fit my Iso head steady last year, because it would of no way fitted, even had to helicoil one of the threads.
My trade is engineering, & I cannot believe that it would be any more hardship getting it right.
Seems to me the marketing is more important than the product.

Are you Coco's dad?

Hi,
iIs odd that I thought my frame was not correct when I had to file the unit down to secure it on the frame.
I wonder how many others have had to do this.
Your right about the manufacturing not being correct.
Its a pity because it is a good unit once fitted.
I hope RGM read this web site.

Don't you guys realize there are two different sized frame tubes (English and Metric). Also powdercoating can make a significant difference in diameters. So you have to fit the clamp a little...

Mine fitted first go and clamps perfectly. It has shown no sign of moving or loosening over two years.

I think that as a precision item, it highlights the differences in frame tolerances. The major flaw is that something marketed as suitable for all Commandos should offer alternative fittings.

Realistically speaking, we should all be measuring our top tubes and ordering a clamp accordingly but that would make it more expensive and mine fits whilst the rest of 'em don't seem to...So Tough Titty ! :)

Yup - mine's Italian, with Imperial sized tubes, so I'd expect the 'clamp' to do just that :?

There's always one....not me, for once
It's just a reminder that we're still dealing with British here, and I'm a British Engineer too.

Oh, the shame....

Make you own and there's no one else to blame if it doesn't fit. $15, in parts, drill motor, hack saw, and a file. Why not if one has to hand fit it anyway?
