They are a very nice bike and I'm sad that I didn't really appreciate what they were like back in the 70s, even though I once rode pillion on one back then. At least they were a real motorcycle, as a Ducati is these days.

I know what you mean. I, too, have gotten turned off by some of the contraptions the manufactures are pawning off as motorcycles. I recall getting real excited reading about the, then new, BMW K1600. I went to my local BMW dealer to check one out with the intention of buying. Once I took a good look at that monstrosity I was glad to ride home on my old K75. The physical size of a lot of the new bikes are way too big. You mentioned a Ducati as being a proper motorcycle. I'd add some of the Moto Guzzis to the list, also. As a matter of fact, when it comes to torque, you don't know what torque is until you've ridden a 1200cc Guzzi.
