Cylinder head rebuild UK

5.? Kickback/backfire? Pressure escaping between the valve and guide is blowing the seal off?
 
Put a new seal in, replaced springs etc. turned the engine over by hand a few times, took the springs back off & seal is OK so I don't think it's my technique!

Does anybody know the height of the valve guide inside the rocker box? My thinking is if this is a bit high the seals won't fit correctly?

Comnoz (Jim) measured a 750 head for me .465 from the alu around the guide. I'll check this in the morning.

Insulating washers under inlet springs?

I don't have an insulating washer under the inlet springs I'm removing.

The parts book I have shows insulating washers under all the spring, inlet & exhaust.

I did a search on this forum and some say they are only really needed under the exhaust springs, others say if it's in the parts book it should be fitted.

So, should I have an insulating washer under the inlet springs?

If I did put a washer in, is the only implication that the spring gets slightly more compressed?

Update:

Nuts!!!!!

Last night I was refitting the spindle, this is my 5th time re-installing with no prior problems, couldn't quite get it lined up, did my usual giggle & wiggle of the spring washer but it wouldn't lock into place.

I decided, for the first time, to remove the rocker.

Just as I wiggled the rocker I heard a metalic tinkle tinkle, yes the washer dropped down the pushrod tube :roll: then the genius I am while fishing out the spring washer it flicked and it also went down the pushrod tube, 2 for 2. Should have been filming this as it would make a great comedy clip!

I had a decision to make tea or Guinness!, decided on tea and went back to the workshop to try & hook/fish out the washers, I think all I did was push them further down!

I'm off today to get some flexible magnetic tools to see if I can fish them out, if this does not work then the head is definitely coming off, maybe the Norton gods are speaking!

I've never heard of them, but I see on their web site that they have merged with The Cylinder Head Shop, and I've heard great things about them. There was an article in Classic Bike about them the other year.

Good Luck retrieving your washers :)

Good and bad news!

I got the larger spring washer out with a magentic tool I made from some copper wire & a small magnet.

The smaller washer I just can't get! I'm unsure how small this is, as I never got a chance to see it! but I think it may have gone all the way down the the tappet guide block!!

I'll try a few more times fishing around but I'm not optimistic I'll get a result :roll:

Looking more like the head will need to come off.

Just an obvious question, I presume the small washer is made of steel!

Just been google'ing around.

Some lads who have dropped a washer into an engine have used compressed air and a shop vac at the same time.

I'm thinking of using my compressor to feed air into the purhrod tunnel & make up a thin tube adaptor for the shop vac and see if I can pick it up!!!!

Is there any chance I can push the washer anywhere else?

I'm presuming at the end of the pushrod tunnel there is a tappet guide block and the washer can go any further down or out anywhere? Anybody wish to confirm my thinking!!

OK, I give up.

It's taken me all day to realise I just need to take the head off and be done with it, I'm a slow learner!

I've tried everything apart from turning the complete bike upside down and shake hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

I have a feeling the thin washer has worked it was to the bottom, past the cylinder head / barrel joint.

Even with the head off it might be difficult to get out but obviously easier than with the head on!

Could be worse, might have done all this before my holiday spin, at least I got 600 miles done touring around Ireland + another 300 pottering around.

I think having a sense of humour helps with being a Norton owner :D
 
If it makes you feel any better I'm sure I did the same thing once.

If I remember correctly, I was lucky enough to fish it out with a hooked piece of wire after about an hour-just as I was getting ready to give up and take the head off.
 
Did a bit more fishing this morning but no luck.

I've bitten the bullet and have started getting the bike ready for the head to come off, carbs, head steady, coils etc.

I just have the exhaust and the cylinder head bolts to go.

Expect to see a post coming to you soon with 'How the heck do I remove the head' or 'How the heck do I put the head back on' :mrgreen:

Hi , I got them from a guy who mess's about with fords, the guide requires machining at the top only ,but well worth the effort .
I have had a cheap Norton replace ment go floppy when hot, and sure enough they get pulled off...suddern smoking!
