So Britcycle gets $90 for a LED conversion for the stock taillight.

Do you see where I am going with this? I wonder if you can stick the electronics inside the stock taillight. I'm going neg ground so that won't be a problem. Do turnsignals on bikes have to be yellow?

Colors of Lamps and Reflectors
25950. This section applies to the color of lamps and to any reflector exhibiting or reflecting perceptible light of 0.05 candela or more per foot-candle of incident illumination. Unless provided otherwise, the color of lamps and reflectors upon a vehicle shall be as follows:

(a) The emitted light from all lamps and the reflected light from all reflectors, visible from in front of a vehicle, shall be white or yellow, except as follows:
(1) Rear side marker lamps required by Section 25100 may show red to the front.
(2) The color of foglamps described in Section 24403 may be in the color spectrum from white to yellow.

(b) The emitted light from all lamps and the reflected light from all reflectors, visible from the rear of a vehicle, shall be red except as follows:
(1) Stoplamps on vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1979, may show yellow to the rear.
(2) Turn signal lamps may show yellow to the rear.
(3) Front side marker lamps required by Section 25100 may show yellow to the rear.
(4) Backup lamps shall show white to the rear.
(5) The rearward facing portion of any front-mounted double-faced turn signal lamp may show amber to the rear while the headlamps or parking lamps are lighted, if the intensity of the light emitted is not greater than the parking lamps and the turn signal function is not impaired.
(6) Reflectors meeting the requirements of and installed in accordance with Section 24611 shall be red or white, or both.

(c) All lamps and reflectors visible from the front, sides, or rear of a vehicle, except headlamps, may have any unlighted color, provided the emitted light from all lamps or reflected light from all reflectors complies with the required color. Except for backup lamps, the entire effective projected luminous area of lamps visible from the rear or mounted on the sides near the rear of a vehicle shall be covered by an inner lens of the required color when the unlighted color differs from the required emitted light color. Taillamps, stoplamps, and turn signal lamps that are visible to the rear may be white when unlighted on vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1974.

Are those Canadian rules?

Brake Lights May flash intermittently, provided that the brake light(s) do not override the rear turn signal function.

I think I'm hosed with this Oregon law. At least with this all in one solution. Hmmm, might not be worth being a test case for an officer...

Same company has a simple tail light for $22.

I think here in Alberta they have to be a minimum distance apart.... pre 70 you don't even need them...from what I can remember

Pre73 here. But just because you don't have to have them doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Sometimes I think that side-mounted flamethrowers might get the driver's attention...

Be careful with mounting turn signals. In California, police can refer to Title 13; California Code of Regulations for mounting requirements. Below is the short version:

T13 CCR 699 (Turn Signal Lamps) (a) --- Front and rear turn signal lamps on motorcycles shall be at least 23 cm (9 in.) apart, except that front turn signals on motorcycles manufactured after January 1, 1973, shall be at least 40 cm (16 in.) apart.

Not sure about other states or countries. FYI

I have that kit installed for my square taillight. It's wicked bright. Has the white light to shine down on your plate. Wish the price was about half that, but it's easy install... just screw in the 2 bolts and hook up the bullets

This company also makes a kit to replace your signals with led. This kit can also turn the signals into running lights. Brittcycle sells these kits.

Yeah, I know. I was just looking at other options.

Left arm out straight; left turn. left arm extended over head; right turn. Pretty much don't believe that anyone under age 40 grasps that concept as I don't think it is taught anymore but still seems to work as they aren't sure what the hell you are up to. The other benifit is that you can't forget to cancel it.

Hand signals work great. Too bad it doesn't matter how well the rider knows them 90% of the drivers have no idea what you are doing.

Also your arm gets tired holding the flashlight at nite.

Hand signals would work better with a set of LED gloves. Does anyone make them?

Yeah, I like the old school too but does the teeny bopper little girl that just got her license know what those hand signals mean? I doubt it.

My fastback is a 1971...no turn signals. But i do have the LED side marker lights. still have POS ground...just hooked up the light backwards.

Here you can see in this picture...these LEDs look almost Identical the Norton reflectors. Got at superbrightleds.com

Probably not...but the hand signals I use...she is very aware of what they mean.

Nice Bikes!
Two Questions:

Are turn signals required in California for bikes that were not issued with them from the factory. I have a 71.

So LEDs will work on the original positive ground systems by just reversing the wiring? Your the first person I have noticed doing.

What is the exact part number you are using on the Norton? Also, how is it hooked up (to what)? Thanks.
