I'm rebuilding a 72 Commando and replaced the rear hub "cush drive" rubbers with the one's available from Andover Norton. Why are they so hard? What kind of "cushioning" can they provide? Seems like they should be much softer.....Skip

Hi, Welcome! More of a slip off connection for quick wheel removal. Search, read..

They will "squsch up" enough when you torque 'em.

Yep and don't even have to use heavy throttle on em for em to mash up creating slack or even melt some. More so if the drum and hub bearings are somewhat worn out for slight wobble . I've given up on store brought as not time/cost effective so cut my own out of tire fiber re-enforced side walls. Helps to lightly glue em in so replacing wheel is not such a fumble to swearing event. Thicker pad on drive side of paddles and lessor on brake side helps extend service life.

yes, those rubbers ARE hard, but they kind of have to be....

there is no way I can put my rear wheel back on without a helper

I squat on the left side and pull the wheel hard as I can towards me while my assistant struggles to get everything lined up and the axel in on the right side

it also helps to smear a little bit of a silicone lube, safe for rubber, on the cushions

OK....I'll get technical on you now.... it does not take much deformation to significantly lessen the impact load. Somewhere back in my engineering career, I learned that dropping an object onto a hard concrete floor from a distance of 5 feet produced 100 g force on the object, but if the floor was wood over pier and beam, the g force was only 25 g. Just a minuscule amount of "give" on either the object or the "immovable" surface makes the difference.

They are a 'hard compound because the paddles have a small working area, soft and they would last a very short time.
They might even need changing annually if not sooner to do any good.

All other cush drives of the period had large contact surfaces, even then the rubber cushion deteriorates long term.
Anything is better than nothing.
