Which is the best method to check the crankshaft end float, have an old set of FAG bearings ground to ease fitting/removal ? 750 Commando crank, cheers David

The best method is prior to the dismantling of the engine. I use a dial indicator and magnetic base with stylus against the end of the crank. Pull the crank in and out and that should net you the end float. Even with new bearings and rebuilt crank there should be virtually no change in end float providing you replace the same shims if used.

Don't go overboard thinking less end thrust is better, best to just get it within specs.
