I have fitted the mains to my '74 850 and fitted the crank only to the cases. I have .022" end float. Do I need to do anything about that or is it ok to go ahead and reassemble the bottom end.

Thanks
Cheers Don

I believe from memory the spec is 0.020" (i could be wrong) when building my 74 850cc i talked about his with Mick Hemmings as he had done machining work for me including reground crank. He said for a road engine this would be fine and more clearance was better than less (up to a point of course). Given that it is warmer in your part of the world than here in damp windy England an depending on how accurate your measuring methods and equipment are (no pulling you down am just saying) you are so close to spec if it was me i would not worry.

Unless you are going to use a Power Arc ignition, .022 should be fine.

Thanks guys for the replies. Appreciated.

I have decided to remove the timing side main bearing and fit an .008" shim behind it and refit the bearing, thus moving the crank slightly to the drive side and moving the woodruff key ever so slightly away from the drive side crankcase seal. That would bring the end float down to .014" which I am happier with.

Thanks
Don

Years ago I accidentally discovered that a super blend bearing was the same diameter as a Ford 9" rear shim, had some left over from a carrier I rebuilt...I shim my rebuilds to 12-15 @ 50 degrees or cooler shop climate, increase a few thou- for warmer climate. so much easier than removing the race.
