Crankcase mods - advice please

Although the sump location on 72's may be splitting hairs for normal usage, I personally prefer the rear location.

As far as the timing side drainback/level hole is concerned, the stock hole may or may not be too high, but a drilling down below the pump seem potentially detrimental. Perhaps a compromise midpoint to guarantee a good slosh about the timing chest

If one wanted to routinely hit Combat powerband for the pull to speed then the sump drain rear move is good idea for less mess on the fly but otherwise I've not bothered on my 2nd Combat. The hole I may do in Peel would be tiny enough it'd take some time to drain cam area so a non issue on maintaining oil level running. I ain't afraid of crank seal blow outs as much as cam lobe dry rubbing till oil flow gets going.

Hi
These are pictures from my engine, it has Maney crankcase.
There is limited space for extra drainage holes here. Has anyone done this modification of the Maney crankcase?
Could this possibly be performed without dismantling the engine??

Mr Maney has built a few of these if I recall correctly... I'd leave it be if it were mine...

If these lower drain holes are a worthwhile mod how come the Maney cases which are as far as I know strengthened an modified in other way do not have a lower drain hole in them.

Here is a picture of a Maney case that has the hole bored. You can see it at the left lower corner of the oil pump. About 1/2 the hole is in the gasket surface so it would be a bit tougher to do on the bike but with the use of a die grinder and a 1/4 burr I am sure it could be done. Jim

Jim, what is the hose running from the intake to the timing chest for? is it just a drain for the head?

Yes, this is a 1007 Maney motor so there is not enough room to run a passage through the rear of the barrel. Jim

Similar issue with Kenny Dreer 880 using Baisley head.

I couldnt find another "quote' by Comnoz to accompany this picture of drain hole placemenr

It was stated that a small piece of bent tubing could be fitted to the new drain hole to raise the level of oil in the t/case... This would be done for a "street bike"...

The drain hole as pictured is very low and i can see its difficult to find a "place" to drill a hole..

My question is, how much "higher" than the drain hole, would its inlet be????

Jim,
Are there any pics on forum showing what holes to plug and where to drill the lower drain hole in timing side?

Crankcase mods - advice please

Some cases have less holes to plug.
Of coarse you don't need to plug the hole for the ignition wiring.
You would not plug any holes unless you are using a crankcase reed breather. Just drill the lower drain hole. Jim

Is it just me? I don't see a hole anywhere along the taped reference line that would allow draining to that level...

This case has not been modified for the lower oil level. It is just a case that was bolted to a cradle to hold it at the correct angle.

Here is a case with the new oil drain hole drilled. To the left of the oil pump.

And what if? You engine is mounted vertically like an Atlas, actually a Rickman.....

No hole?

A hole somewhere else?

For competition use with a vertical engine I have been drilling the hole the same as the Commando.
For street use with a vertical engine I have left them stock. Jim

Jim, would you drill this lower drain hole for street use in a Commando?

Yes I drill them lower on all Commando's street or race. Jim

I have a question, why would you want the level hole below the oil pump? Could this allow the pump to become air locked?

I have not seen any problem with the oil pump being air-locked. The oil tank is above the oil pump so it would tend to keep the pump full. Jim
