Is this normal - advice please

Was out to get new tyres today and on the way back the bike started making a really weird/new/awful noise. Almost like a dry clutch sound from a Ducati. Only happened once at stand still (clutch in) and was more noticeable at slow speed through town, etc.

Bike is a 2011 CR with low miles. This may be normal and I've never noticed it....or......???

Reason it's fairly urgent is that I'm leaving for the TT next week and would like a bike that's going to last 1k miles over 9 days if possible!

Hi Kev , I thought you had a new 961 ? Are you willing to pull off the primary cover and have a look ? Or take it to Stu Bodycote ? If you want to look yourself , pull out the clutch springs and plates and check basket tightness . Then check starter ring gear in the back for looseness .

Happy to take the cover off - question though....is the gasket reusable?
 
Yes If you don't damage it . If you can get another would be a good idea.

Looking at the CNW manual...is it required to remove the plates & springs to check the basket nut torque? Looking at the images, the nut can be accessed without doing this?
 
If I was doing it , I would want to de-couple the outer basket from inner hub. This way you will check the outer basket for movement or looseness . You will be making a multipoint check. Maybe you should bring it to Stu on second thought.

Had similar on my 2015 SF. Check that the ball bearing on the end of the clutch push rod is well greased. Take the clutch slave cylinder cover off (three bolts, put a cloth on the ground first and watch for washers and the ball bearing dropping off) grease the ball bearing and stick it back in the small dimple on the end of the rod and reassemble the cover, don’t forget the washers. Should take you about 20-30 mins. That should stop your beast screeching.

Thank you. Time is tight on this so Stu isn’t an option I’m afraid…..unless he fancies a day in Glasgow?!

I bought a new clutch kit (plates and springs) and a clutch tool yesterday so the plan is to open the primary, visually inspect anything weird, remove old clutch plates/springs, check basket, redo basket nut to spec then replace clutch plates. Will also replace clutch fluid.

Sound sensible? The very least I can do in the time I have and I’ll spot anything damaged before the worst happens. Also knowing the basket is done to spec and the clutch is new will give me peace of mind.

Thank you. That sounds like an option too.

Will add that to the list! As it’s a “relatively” simple job, I’ll get it done.

Kev, also remove the front sprocket cover and check the sprocket is tight. ( be careful not to lose the spacers that are under the cover screws)

So this is my plan of attack over the next few days....I'd appreciate feedback if possible, please?

Please remember, I'm limited with time on this as I need to leave for the TT soon and want to do as much as possible with the limited time I have left that gives me peace of mind for the journey and associated mileage. To be clear, if I find anything strange, I will take my other bike on the trip. Here goes.....

1: Order oil, clutch plates, clutch springs & clutch locking tool - Done!
2: Remove primary cover (carefully!) & re-use gasket
3: Visually inspect for shrapnel
4: Remove pressure plate
5: Remove clutch plates
6: Visually inspect hub/basket...rivets, etc
7: Un-do hub nut and re-tighten to spec - leaving other parts in place - nut check ONLY
8: Renew clutch plates/springs
9: Reassemble
10: Change clutch fluid
 
Maybe it would be worth checking the sprocket first, as it’s the easiest thing to do and should definitely be checked anyway.
I’m pretty sure Norton specified Locktite on the clutch centre nut, so you’ll need to clean and re-apply if you loosen it.

Yeh will do the sprocket. Just creating a list focussed on the clutch work

Picked up locative so good to get the nut to spec.

Another question....RE: reusing the primary gasket. I intend to be super-careful, etc but if the worst happens...is gasket sealant a good idea? Or best avoided at all costs?

You can use Loctite 515 or 518, any excess stays as a liquid and will not block any oil passages or get between teeth or plates. 518 is better than 515 for this application.

I have used silicone rtv gasket maker ( high torque-grey color) permatex . Just lightly coat the gasket with it.
