Hi Lads,

http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g5.html

Part no. 6, it's a grub screw on the underside of the crankcase, what does it do?

I have a small weep of oil from this area & before I start grabbing my tools I just want to be sure what the grub screw does?

Thanks in advance

Kevin

The screw simply blocks the entry point from an internal oilway drilling. They're normally staked but I have seen them sweating oil.

It's worth check tightening it and then perhaps removing next time the oil is changed which will then give you the chance to degrease properly and Loctite it.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure it was not a crucial screw holding the entire crank together

I presume from what you have said if I attempt to remove this screw with a full oil tank I'll be changing my oil whether I like it or not!

Actually not necessarily as no.6 is sealing a bore which belongs to the scavenge system. If lots of oil come out your pump is gone....

I believe in order to properly machine the oil ways, they had to come in from exterior location to produce the channels. The hole left behind was then blocked. I have an extra in my crankcase adjacent from the sump inlet on the out side nearer to the drain plug. It came in mighty handy to inspect and to cleaning out these tunnels. During a crankase overhaul, I found many bits from a previous owners let-go. Should be one of the first things to check during a rebuild. I believe many rebuilds fail due to this neglection.
