Hi all,

Anyone care to weigh in on this one?

Crack or Cast?

Look it over with a magnifying glass.

Spray with brake clean & wipe, then run it for a bit until warm. Dust with baby powder to see if there's a fresh trace of oil weeping out.

Ah.Only reason I ask is because I lost my cases in '77. Cracked from the main on that side all the way back to the seam. Was told early '73 850's had weak cases before adding more webbing inside. I've ask around about this since, but haven't heard any further comment to confirm it. In your case.......I sure it's the cast and not a crack. Good luck.

Relax its a normal and universal casting mark but yours is a bit nicer less apparent than identical marks on my two Combats. A real crack to grind out and fix will not show up by just a mere glance eyeballing as by that time its would be in two or more pieces. A real crack has very cobweb thin line but is continuous, if a torturous path w/o gaps in the line of fracture. A lot of crack start deep inside and work their way to the surface.

Your right hobot. I vote casting mark.

+1 on a casting mark. The shape is consistant with a intentionally shaped plug used while making the mold.
