Corrosion?

Any other 961 owner had issues with corrosion on the metal plate behind the numberplate and on the frame under the tail piece?
 
I spoke to Norton and they will check it out when the bike goes back for service in a couple of weeks. I took the seat off last night and the plate the rear of the air box bolts in to is rusting also, I touched the edge of the plate that runs up to the air filter and the paint dropped off revealing a rusty surface and this piece isn't open to the elements!
Not sure how it stands regarding a warranty claim ( I have 4 weeks of the 2yrs left) but will be interesting to see what they say.
 
I checked mine and it is all clean. Do you have to dissassemble parts to see or is it obvious. You must have gotten some salt up there! :(
 
no nothing needs disassembling and I clean the bike like it's a religion. If it were salt then surely the frame plate under the seat next the air filter wouldn't be suffering the same? also seems to only affect the flat plates of the frame and not the tubing. anyway thanks for checking, will see what the factory says.

thats the air filter and airbox under the seat bolted to a part of the frame that is out of the weather but rusting enough to flake the paint off. It's a little damp there as I've just washed the bike down again before it goes back for its final service whilst under warranty. (the other areas are far worse)
I spoke to another owner today who go his bike 3 months before me and he also has a rusty frame issue.
He told me his tank leaks fuel..... mine started leaking fuel about 3 weeks ago, I still love the bike to bits but I no longer wear those rose tinted specs so popular round here.
 
It looks as though the edge of that plate was not painted properly. Do they use ethanol in Wales, and if so how much 5% etc., it is notorious for eating plastic tanks!!
PS. I just checked and it appears you have had 10% Ethanol since 1992. Are you using an Etanol stabilizer to save your tank. I have used a stabilizer Since day one in my Norton as Ethanol ate gas tanks on my 2 Ducati's, a Triumph and an MV Augusta!
 
the plastic surrounding one of the brass breather/overflow pipes near the filler cap has split, not sure why that should happen. Never used an Ethanol stabilizer as one was never suggested, had a 1098 Ducati for 5 yrs with no fuel tank problems and similarly my other ride a 3yr old Multistrada is fine.
Maybe you're right the frame wasn't painted properly at that edge (or a number of other places) but the paint looked good until I ran my fingers along it and it flaked away like that.
 
in the Us Ducati, Ducati dealers and the forums all recommend etanol stabilizers such as Startron or MARINE Stabil. It is prominitely displayed at all of my local Ducati dealers. If you search the Ducati forums you will find hours of reading on this. Norton claims our tanks have been tested for ethanol but all of the major oems use tanks made by Acerbis.

Where exactly do you have to look to inspect these fittings that you refer to?
 
What ethanol stabilizer are you using. I haven't used any yet buy I have Starbright (blue stuff) for my boat. I'll give it a whirl.

I am using Marine Stabil But Startron or Starbright ? should do the same thing, They somehow suspend the etanol and keep it from eating the plastic in marine and bike tanks!
 
would ethanol cause a clean vertical split in the plastic around the brass breather/overflow pipe?

my bike is at the factory a week now and they hope to work on it at the end of next week, we'll see what they have to say then although I'm not holding my breath on a warranty tank and frame fix.
I have spoken to 4 other owners with similar aged 961 and two of them have rust issues with the frame, that makes 3 out of 5 bikes aged two to three years with rusting frames.
 
Not exactly relevant to any particular corrosion problem, but about 4 years ago I bumped into a Norton factory tester (with 961) at a gas station in Shropshire UK. The bike was obviously a hack and had about 30,000 miles up, the frame was in a dreadfully corroded state with rust all over it.

just to tie this one up....

Picked my bike up from Donington yesterday, after six weeks away my bike now has a new frame and a new tank and has had it's 2nd years service. Done 200 miles since and it looks and runs well.

One thing, I never had any issues with my side stand before but with the new frame my side stand is too long and the bike sits very upright Will see how it sits the next few days and decide if I'll go down the route of shortening it.

New frame, wow!

Wonder why they didn't just blast and re coat the old one?
 
I have some frame corrosion too. All the parts suffer pretty hard from corrosion. But it does not bother me hard. As long as it keeps going.

Mine is from december 2011, had a new tank (leaked also), complete engine rebuild last year, new ecu and various other warranty issues. But i must say... touch wood... since the engine rebuild last year, the only thing that went wrong was a relay that vibrated loose.

I stopped treating it good lately. Riding it now as it's meant to. And funny enough, the bike likes it!
