is there a factory correct routing of the speedometer cable? this may be another dumb, over thinking question, but is there a correct way to route the speedometer cable on my 74 Mk2? the area of concern is whether it routes above or below the front iso motor mount. there appears to be a cavity above the iso mount and the crankcase that would have less of a sharp bend as the cable transitions down from the instrument to the horizontal frame section. above the iso mount seems to be a more direct routing with less bends.

correct speedometer cable routing - ???

how come the speedo/tach cables do not route in front of the lower fork yoke? kind of thinking that may be a photo prop for catalogs, brochures, and advertising. looks just too perfect for a production unit.

anyway, I re-routed my cable from the speedometer over the lower, RH frame member, and under the iso mount and along the horizonal frame member. it has the minimum number of bends going in to the gearbox speedometer drive. trying to get a slight bounce out of my needle reading.

Just checking that your cable inside cover is well lubricated , sometimes just that can smooth things out ... last fall got a new speedo cable complete from Vintage Cables out in western Canada , the nice lady included a couple little packets of grease .... I usually use a motion pro thingie and spray lube for cables which works very well , so well in fact ,Brad , biker that lives across from street is over here several times a season to keep his various cables lubed on his several bikes ..... hope you erase that bump .....

Ive got one of those cable lube clamp thingies. Everytime ive tried to use it, ends up spraying lube out from the big end seal, no matter how hard I tighten the clamp bolts. Never sure if much lube is getting in cable.
What am I missing?

I got one for free years ago from a well respected parts dealer (Art Xanders, RIP) and all I ever got from it was an eyeful of WD-40.

Because you can easily take the core out of these cables, I generously slather it with Molybdenum Disulfide grease (available at EVERY auto parts store) and the clock needles are rock steady. Remember to respect the 6” rule.
I use the Cable Life spray & tool for cables that do NOT easily seperate. Great stuff.

I recently bought a speedo cable from Andover, and upon enquiring regards lubrication received the following:
Apparently, you do not need to oil the cable but if you want to, then use a light lubricating oil. I use 3 in 1.

Not sure what you missing Toro , make sure you have cable sheath in correct detent ? , I did go across street and watch Brad use it , after I had a bit of mess , once you get the knack it not difficult and does a nice relatively clean job ... end of season I give it till drips from other end , then hang in shed over night before re-installing , during season just a couple quick squirts .... between Brad I (15yrs younger) we figure the large spray can he bought a few years ago should do us both until we done riding haha!
