For years I've been using a really old Corbin seat that mounts like a stock seat going over the shock mounts and held on by the nice aluminum knobs. Well in my case polished stainless steel knobs. Anyway I just bought One from a guy who bought it new last year but then sold the bike and I guess the new owners wanted to stock seat so I buy the Corbin from him. I wanted the locking mechanism him of the newer versions but I'm shocked at how heavy the lead weight boat anchor mounting bracket is. I'm thinking of making one out of aluminum and while certainly not as strong as steel I think as long as the bolts they tied it will be fine. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this yet? I can't believe I'm the first person to think that it's too heavy. I'm kind of surprised that Corbin doesn't make them out of aluminum in the 1st place #1 and #2 The welding on the bracket from Corbin is nothing to write home about as far as elegance is concerned. I am a structural steel welding inspector and myself not particularly a good welde The welding on the bracket from Corbin is nothing to write home about as far as elegance is concerned. I am a structural steel welding inspector so maybe that makes me look at it a little bit differently but I doubt it and although I am not a particularly good welder I think I could do a better job myself. It's certainly strong enough but the fabrication is less and elegant. I'm going to try to make one out of aluminum and then I will post the results. Glenn T.S.

I'm with you Glen, in fact if you make two brackets I'd gladly buy one from you.

I'd go one step further, I wish Cordin still made a seat that used the stock mounting system, the bracket and lock and key etc is all totally unnecessary.

Even more so for me as the bike doesn't even have an ignition key, yet I still have to have a key just to lift the Seat!

Well I for one like to be able to lock the seat. I was going to contact Corbin and ask why they wouldn't make these brackets lighter but a friend pointed out that making them in aluminum might be cost prohibitive. I hadn't really thought about that, don't really know how much more alluminum would cost but I'm sure that's a fracture. Also they may not be concerned about the weight. I was shocked the first time I picked up one of their "Smuggler" seats that have the locking storage compartment at the back. I thought my friend had it packed full of lead weights but it was empty!!!

Interesting. Yes, they are a bit ponderous, but with what they usually fit, their owners aren't particularly worried about weight! As an aside, just the other day, my Corbin seat post broke off. Had to get a mate to machine up another one.

Your mounting post broke? Wow, I have heard of them coming out and getting lost. From what I rememberCorbin will send you a new one. Maybe they take more stress then I was thinking. Perhaps aluminum isn't strong enough to take the stress put on tat pin and it might over time wallow out the threaded hole the pin goes in.

Maybe it didn't occur to you yet but I suggest to give your bracket the 'Hobot' treatment and drill as many holes until you are satisfied with the remaining weight  This way you will also keep the stronger threaded fitting of the mounting post.

Wow, the "Hobot" treatment... Didn't even think of that. Although I don't know if I can be as surgical with a shotgun as he is!!! Hey Hobot where are you? I miss you brother!

Well, I am a fat bastard. The idea of Hobotting it sounds good.

Well I have a corbin seat on my bike at the moment, however it is a much older model from "back in the day" and is tufted with that old custom look and uses the stock mounting system, anyway it is super heavy, and i was really suprised when I picked it up for the first time. I had thought of using the "hoboT lightening treatment" on it at one time, but now I'm leaning towards retiring it and using a different one. Unfortunately hoboT's close friend and riding buddy passed away, and that's gotta be a life changing thing, but I would like to see him return to these threads too.

That's right cjandme I forgot his friend passed, it is hard, I lost my main ridding friend a while back and I does change things. I'm thinking the stress on the "pin" may be to much going into aluminum.i guess the weight I'm saving by using a lithium Ion battery can off set the weight of the bracket for now.
