Evening all,
Attended my local NOC meeting this evening, only about 16 mile drive. The guys were surprised that the engine was still hot after a couple of hours. After my return home I checked the oil cooler which was hot on one side, the side with the hoses, the other side was cool to the touch - is this normal.
Thanks
John

The cooler is on the return path to the tank so you can always check the warmth (and level) of your oil by removing the dipstick, it should reassure you that you are getting a good oil return.

I had a 50mile run today, it was 30degC and far too hot for comfort. I checked my cooler (because I had been playing with it in the week) and it was too hot to hold, it cools down a lot quicker than the engine cases though.

Thanks Martin,
My concern is that only one side of the cooler appears hot - is this normal? Checked immediately after I stopped. Oil level seems ok, checked that yesterday, engine just seems very hot after two hours. It is running ok, apart from initial niggles which I am assured will be sorted at service.

Yes Engine stays hot a long time. Must be the amount of mass ? Pipes will be cool to the touch and motor sill feels hot. As far as the oil cooler , not enough miles on it with 16 miles to get uniformly hot. Drive it further 50-75 miles and you will find a more uniform HOT .

Appreciated. These bikes are really quirky and nothing like any of my previous!

No other 961 but there are members with them, just not at the meeting. Yes Essex branch - made to feel very welcome and a chance to talk motorbikes, old and new, for a couple of hours. Didn’t take pics - will do next time, a few 750s and a couple of 850s, a 99 and a couple of bitsa all in really good nick.

The engine is so big remmebr, it’ll hold ‘latent heat’ a long time. It’s a bit like an old AGA cooker...!

Thanks all
Can’t get the bike into service until September so thought I would check the oil level (pre emptive) - now forgive me here for sounding a little ignorant - on the dipstick there are two marks which I take as low and high oil level, however above these marks is a knurled section which also has a low and high mark. This is not the indicator is it?

Old dipstick in manual. New one has knurled section as mark where the range of oil level should be...

Might need to do something I have not done in many years - add oil to a new vehicle

You have the new dip stick, keep it on the lower mark all the time( the bottom of the knurled section ) correct me if I’m wrong anyone, but certain this is the case ,remember to get an accurate level u have to run engine between pouring in a few times & keep bike vertical of the side stand to bike is level, lot of oil in box thing was oil levels to high , so hence the modified stick.

So just above the bottom indicator on the knurled section is about right?

Thanks Tony,
You have to question why Norton have not updated the owners handbook - the one supplied is low quality so it would not cost much to change it!
Is your excerpt from the £20 workshop manual? That’s probably why they don’t update the owners handbook ;)

This is the Euro 4 Service Manual which was given to the forum free by Norton. It may still be available as a link on the forum. Or just let us know and we can send you a copy.

The manual was £90 when I bought it... and it was out of date!

But as a Tony says, Norton distributed a very good electronic version on here a little while ago.

Thank you
MxMartin has offered to email me a copy so my confusion may go...for a little while anyway.
