Composite tanks and Efuels

I can't read straight at times but this article basically said all the old fiberglass tested did fine by them, hm. I know one rural station I half depended on to get gas in time had all tanks dug up, fined 1/4 million $ and went out of business with leaking fb tanks. You warn us no one it testing or producing proper ehtanol proof tanks so why the conflict of this report yet still failing tanks everywhere?

BTW Carbon what do you hold petrol in on your motorcycles nowadays?

http://www.fiberglasstankandpipe.com/ethanol.htm is quite interesting! Maybe Burton Bike Bits in the UK who continue to produce GRP tanks which are not resistant to Efuels should have a read?

Have you spoken to Burton about this? They appear to recognise the problem and may be doing something about it. Unless you're the sole person who has exclusive knowledge about the subject we're all in deep shit.

I think we're already in deep shit if not worse. I too understood the article that old F/G was good. Go figure.

The article isnt really relevant to our tanks so I wouldnt worry too much, they may be fibreglass but what resin is used? Im pretty sure it isnt epoxy, polyester or even vinyl ester

Underground fuel storage tanks are generally made using high cross link polyester resin systems, which are approved under Underwriters Laboratory standard 1316. The primary reason recently made bike tanks such as those sold as ethanol resistant by Burton are almost certainly going to fail, is due to improper post cure processing, which means that even if high cross link resins have been used, chemical resistance can be reduced significantly and problems will occur at some stage.

The fact that there is no accurate information related specifically to GRP bike tanks, and people like Burton are selling products which are not fit for purpose, are not things which give customers a great deal of confidence in composite tanks, which can be fabricated to be 100% resistant to all pump fuels, but necessarily cost a little more to produce than non resistant GRP, and are therefore not as attractive commercially.

are they of your own manufacture? as all I can gather is that the fiberglass Norton tanks available are not e-fuel resistant, at least not USA e-fuel. If so, I'd love to see a photo and know how old they are/ how long they have contained 10% ethanol gas without failing.

Whether or not a composite tank is able to contain E10 without failure is irrelevant in terms of production parts being offered for sale. Tanks need to be able to stand up to at least 50% ethanol over an extended period, if they are to work properly anywhere in the world where common ambient temperatures may be far higher than those in the UK. When we are ready to sell Efuel proof composite tanks they will have been properly tested as I have outlined, and will be sold with a 2 year guarantee covering everything except impact damage, and damage caused by improper fitting. Be interested to hear about anyone else selling composite tanks, able to provide a guarantee along the same sort of lines?

Two years should be sufficient to find out if the composite maintains it's integrity?

I'd love to make a glass tank for my modern, have experience in glass, but don't know what resin would make it feasible long term.

"When we are ready to sell Efuel proof composite tanks they will have been properly tested as I have outlined, and will be sold with a 2 year guarantee"

you know, the one I have, which only recently failed (started bubbling in '02), was made pre '73......... little more than 2 years ago, unfortunately, the warranty has now expired

but you know what the problem with a warranty is, it is only worth as much as you can pay a lawyer.

being that you are obviously such an authority, why will you not answer questions about your Norton, or show pictures, or do anything other than quote others observations in your more than 2 posts a day........?

call me paranoid if you will, but I am not so full of Sh1t I will not respond to pertinent enquiries.

ooops,, probably banned now

If you are seriously interested in a properly made composite tank that comes with a 2 year guarantee, I am sure you will be quite able to direct your "pertinent enquiries" to one of the many suppliers able to help with this!
