Looking to fit a full size winter windshield to a Mk3 Commando Interstate. A search at this forum does find much at all.
I want a windshield that will attach to the fork set, not a fairing with a fixed headlight. Not a little half windshield with clip on bars.
I would like to see some actual installations on Norton Commando rather than links to supplier website.

I cant find any Commando windshield install photos right now my self.
Here is National windshield - street shield

Here is a little larger shield from National - Plexi
I realize, as a long time rider, that the beauty aspect of a practical windshield is not an attractive accessory.
I need cold wind Deflection!

I have a Memphis Shades universal.

It attaches to the handle bars. Quality made.

I've been considering some such for mine rather than hopping on my wallowing wing because the Commando is the best feeling bike I've ever had.

I have the later model large dunstall fairing that was used on hondas mostly. It's pretty bulbous, and it doesn't block all that much wind. It takes the wind off my chest on highway runs which is about all. It was an eye opener for me because I thought it would block more of the windblast. Some of the problem blocking the wind has to do with how tall the seat is on a norton and in my case how tall I am too. Eventually I actually cut the height of mine down because it was too close to my face an it wasn't blocking the wind to my face area anyway.

I always scour the local craigslist for parts and there's always older model full coverage fairings for sale at low prices. (sometimes free) Maybe you could buy one cheaply and experiment to see if even one of those touring fairings blocks the wind to your satisfaction.

With the commando's seating position, I think the fairing would have to be pretty big to block the wind completely....

Dave, It looks like your Universal is now called Hellcat in the Memphis website, held in place by a single handlebar mount on each side. I dont see a rose color bottom, but several options.

Anyone else have photos of their Commando with a large winter windshield?
Please post if you can
Thanks

I ran a “ barn door” fairing, like the Plexifairing in the second post, on my Interstate back in the late ’80s. Did the job fine, but was nasty in a cross wind.

Dave,
Does it work?
I love riding when it is cooler but have always been too vain for looks to put one on.
It worked but I didn't put many miles on it because it was very noisy. I have a wind deflector for it now and need to try the screen again. I'm interested in blocking wind on the highway and deflecting rain on long trips. I don't ride in the cold.

Crosswinds are always going to be an inconvenience with bar/fork mount windscreens. It's just something to be dealt with if you don't wish to have the full frame mounted bulky, heavy, handling altering, aesthetic ruining touring type faring..... I know kinda got carried away with things there, but I am thinking about one of the bar-mount windscreens which drop down below to block wind to the body. Without that feature one still loses too much body heat from the wind penetration.. I promise.

I know some of you ride full farings w/lowers.... Dressed well I've done 40F days and a bit lower without major discomfort when 20 years younger, and my old wing has none of the fancy heaters and ducts like new touring machines. If you block the wind and capture a bit of engine heat you can discover a reasonable comfort zone. Mostly not at high speeds either..... Say below 70 mph.

I agree with the above but have found in general for non-racing bikes nobody makes an aerodynamic fairing. BMW did send a R100RS to Pinnifarinna (look it up) to get that fairing made (in a wind tunnel) and so I brought a s/h one and copied it with a mould used a taller flip up screen and when mounted was very effective.
I mounted it as a handlebar fairing so it required widening to 25 inch. A difficult and complex job, but hardly affected by crosswinds. The one thing I deliberately did was mount the top of the screen just below eye level and 10 inchs from the end of my nose, as recommended by the weekly Motorcycle mag in the 1970s.
You can't get another fairing anywhere in the world that has been set up in a wind tunnel.

My BIL had an '80 or '81 R100RT and I have to admit, with these coastal winds we have almost year round here, that the faring on it was by far the best I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Protection, handling, wind sheer no issue.

Hi
You need a screen with a wind lip, otherwise you get head buffering, with the wind lip it diverts the air up over the top of your helmet it is a great improvement.
Most screens deflect the wind straight into the top of your helmet, and wind from semi trailers, trucks and passing cars make your neck muscles stress out, very tiresome on long or short trips, the wing lip I have found stops this.

Maybe this for $125. It’s on Craigslist San Francisco Bay Area.
