Maybe it's here and I'm missing it, but is there a reliable source to decode the VIN as to model, engine, etc?

Engine / year, yes.

The easiest way would be for you to give us the engine/certification plate number (the first four of the six digits is usually enough)

However, it's unlikely we will be able to tell you much more than the Mark/year.

For more detailed information, you could try contacting the records sections of either the UK NOC or VMCC, as they both have access to the surviving factory dispatch records.

I get all empty frames with little white boxes with red "x"s in them.

I have used his site for years with no problems before today.

My site does not use frames.
The empty boxes on the home page are the associated link pix that the microsoft editor renamed without my permission so they don't show up on the screen.
all links continue to work.
all previous content is there
Since I have plenty of more important things to do like shipping product or tech research, fixing pix priority is not up there on a website that I get $0 to write or maintain.
I'll fix it when I get some "free" time, LOL
