Anyone have a picture of these mufflers fitted on their cycle (being sold by CS on fleabay). I understand length is approx 26". Is that shorter than standard ? Any other recommendations on mufflers. I would prefer the seamless but just need good quality

Staintune performance mufflers here in Mittagong have a shorter peashooter version in seamless stainless steel you might be interested in. I could fit one to one side of my bike for a photo if you are interested. It is actually designed for a modern Triumph and bracket would need to be made up. But Staintune do that too.

Thanks Phil. I am in Texas USA so I will try to source stateside. The ones I have found seem to be OK. and fixing brackets are as per standard peashooters. I will see if anyine else has any thoughts

Okay matey.
Staintune S/S gear is not cheap. Plus freight of course. There is a pic of them on their website fitted to a Bonneville. I was thinking of them but have opted for English made peashooters.

When they first came out, I thought the bean cans were so non Commando in looks, I was bewildered that Norton could do this. Now I actually like the look of them but they seem restrictive, the motor just doesn't have that free revving feel achieved using peashooters. I won't be keeping mine on the Roadster but I can see why some don't mind them at all.

try EPCO they are in the US and make a top shelf stainless pea shooter. After suffering 3 broken Emgo mufflers. They tend to break where they attach to the header, I bought some EPCO, they sound really good and the finish is spot on. Also they are narrower at the junction of the taper and the stub that attaches to the header, so more clearance on the kick starter that is not a bad thing.
Cheers Richard

Thanks Richard,
How much are they?

Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Mufflers

Can't find the pipes your talking about on fleabay but for $200 I got these from Trojan motorcycles in Belfield and they have been great made by Arion Pacific Industries
I had to make up new brackets as they were set different to the black caps (otherwise they bolt straight on) and can't fault them
Not seamless (seam around the end cone, not down the side) They sound like they should

+1 on EPCO. I had them on the '74 I just sold, and I really liked them. Excellent craftsman ship and great sound. Maybe a touch louder than others I have had...

These are not shorties. Mine are 26.5" which I believe are standard length, but definitely not shorties. I got them from CS about 4 years ago on ebay. The left pipe was not quite right and he sent another without having to return the bad one. I have since gotten another set of down pipes, for I blued the crap out of them during initial tuning a long time age. Mine new ones still blue up a little but I am sure it is because of my particular engine modifications.

They used to come with extended bracket because the pipes that came with the complete system were 3" longer, supposed to be a tuned length. Now I think they come with the standard length pipes because the extra hardware is/was extremely nice, must have cost them to plenty to supply it, and is no longer seems to be offered with the system.

I will say this. They are a very good quality product and the fit is nicely tucked.

This is an older photo and my bike has seen some changes but not the exhaust. If you look close you can see the extended bracketry.

I will also say that they fit with no stresses on the any of the mounts.

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

Hi all,

The EPCO mufflers have not been available for quite some time. Tom had them made in South America for several years, so they were actually not US made. A few years ago, EPCO turned the distribution over to Stainless Ride in Florida but they decided to stop making the Commando mufflers about a year ago. The quality of the muffler towards the end was fair as about 25% of them had to be returned since they did not work with the 1 3/8 header pipes. The inlet was to large and they would not get tight.

I used them for years on my builds and I agree that they sound great. The fact that they were stainless was also nice since they could get re-polished at any time

Since there was a void in the market place, I decided to start making a stainless muffler myself

This not a shorty muffler but rather a std peashooter length

This is not a sales pitch but rather just information of whats available out there

I only heard about these at Trojan yesterday. It's on my list to phone them, plus chasing after a few other bits and pieces. I hadn't heard of them before and within easy striking distance for me, being as they are in Sydney.

Matt,

I looked on your website, but didn't see headers for sale. Do you have headers to match your mufflers? If not, do you have a recommendation for headers that would compliment your mufflers?

Thanks,

Chris McCarthy

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

Chris,

Just finished up on the mufflers a few weeks ago and I am moving forward with header pipes next. They will also be stainless steel and have a conical end like the MkIII header that allows for some fine adjustment

Its a different company that will be doing the headers and I have sent them some samples of what I want. They just have to make sure they have the mandrels for the specific bends.

Hopefully I will have them ready late summer / early fall

For quite some time I have been using a header pipe made by Rabers Parts Mart in San Jose, CA. It is a chrome pipe.

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

I just bought a set of CS big bore pipes and mufflers. Though my build is a little ways from mounting exhaust, the quality of the pipes looks really good. The thickness of the sidewalls is much heavier that my other pipes. I am very pleased.

Thanks for the link, Matt, but I think will wait until yours are available. Please give us a heads up when you have them for sale!

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

I ended up buying the seamless mufflers from commando specialities. Yes they are made in Taiwan however the quality of these pieces are top notch. None of the old problems. Very well made and avery economical replacement at $170 for the pair. Pipes were sourced from rabers - made in USA for $136 a pair. Last batch so be quick. Top quality. You need the split collars for fitting as the ends are fluted as was standard on the mark 111

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

Matt,

How are you coming along with headers at Colorado Norton Works?

Chris

Re: Commando Specialtities Shorty Peashooter Big Bore Muffle

I just put the CS Big Bore set-up on my bike. The right side fit perfectly. When I put the left side on, the muffler was one inch out past the mounting holes. Puzzled at first, I pulled the pipes off and measured the header pipes. The Left one is one inch longer than the other. There is a flange inside the muffler that lets header go only so far into muffler, and both were bottomed out. But it was an easy fix. I took a dremel with cutting wheel and cut off required length off the long header pipe. Now both are same length and mufflers both line up with holes.
