Yes you read it right, Command revving to 11K!

No new red line needed tho', to be honest at a steady (aural ) 3k or thereabouts the needle on the rev counter is all over the place, whipping around from 6 to 10+k, or 1 to 9k, I stopped at a junction with an indicated tickover of a 6 to 8k, it hasn't quite performed a full 360 yet! In the space of about 10 minutes it went from a slight twitch to full on St Vitus dance.

I'm hoping that it is a split in the cable - I noticed that the armouring had fractured where it touches one of the fins. I will have to take a look at it on the coming weekend, I need to check my speedo also 'cos that failed on the Humber bridge when I was returning from the Begonia, so I will put a drill to both. They are both still accurate when stationary & the ignition is off.

Could somebody please remind me if the drive cables run clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Regards

Mike

Technically, it's clockwise, the direction of rotation as viewed from the drive (speedo/tacho) end of the cable (or as if looking down through the unit) thus anti-clockwise when viewed from the base of the instrument, so you need the drill set in reverse.

Once I hit 10,000. Sideways ,as in lying down on the pavement at King and Church Toronto. Throttle stuck open. 70 S. Opted to lay er down Screaming on her side. Saw the Tach a second before before aborting the whole event. Reached under and shut off ign. then picked 'er up ,first kick then on my way. Bad cable. Alive as you can attest. :|

You might have some oil migrating up the cable into the tach, causes drag on the magnetic working and the instrument will continue to wind up. Easily fixed by replacing the small 'o' ring at lower end of cable to remove excess oil in tacho stand instument on side and gently warm with a hair dryer and allow oil to drain out.

Hi Mike - Greetings from South Yorks after our super NOC trip via the North Sea - my mk3 tacho packed up twixt Bremen & Begonia - new cable put on & the rev counter operates very smoothly now - speedo needle bounces around so I think I'll treat that to a new cable also - Alan
