Is there any particular brand of rear stand that works well on the Commando. I had front and rear stands for my Ducatis which were great for maint but they are long gone since we moved to Mexico. I want to get one for my Norton...

Yeah, but I want one that actually works and doesn't threaten me with a hernia every time I try to put it on the stand and almost the same effort to get it off! :)

Once it's on the CS, if the bke is on a reasonably smooth concrete floor, you have to lift the back of the bike to get the center stand to swing rearward over-center. If you don't lift and just try to push the bike off the stand, it just slides t, stand down, along the concrete. PLUS, on the centerstand the rear wheel does not clear the ground.

Sounds like maybe you have one of those pirate stands. :? No such problems with my AN-supplied centerstand.

Maybe one of the racers could advise on using a sportbike rearstand. Seems like you'd have to fit spools somewhere on the swingarm...

For bikes w/o mass of center stand I made a electrical conduit box with a fold up handle I slip under to lift either end in one motion. A type of cycle jack I think its called but no mods to bike to be lifted.

I turned these up out of 1" aliminum hex stock. With longer lower shock mounting bolt, these would thread on and offer good support for my stand and be out of the way of stuff.

It's hard to get a stand to work good and not get in the way of other stuff on a Commando. Brake and speedo cables along with exhaust hardware seem to clutter up the function of a pitstand.

The reason they are not on now is that i am trying out the passenger pegs there with the rearsets and all.

go to pit bull.com ,they have a rear stand for Commando

I got mine from them a couple years ago and ditched the bouncing center stand

call pit bull and order the rear stand with the replacement lower shock longer bolts the stand goes under to lift

fast and easy to use to service chain lubes, tire changes, etc

If your center stand is difficult to use you may want to see if there is excessive play or if a little grease would help.

I don't have any problems with my bike, goes right up, easy peasy. But it's got new bushings and enough of an oil leak to keep everything lubed.

Checked out that pit bull stand - looks really nice.

Bike has the original CS so no pirate sutff - its a REAL Norton part! :)

The bushings and holes for the bushings in the frame and CS are worn/elongated. I could fix it by welding up the holes on the CS and the engine cradle, redrilling them and buying new bushings. I had 3 Ducatis without CSs and I didn't miss them at all since I had a rear stand (and a front stand) in the garage when I needed to work on them. I like the stands because you can still move the bike while on the stand...BUT...you can't pull the swing arm using a rear stand...

Decisions, decisions...

Some stands the legs bend out or length now quite right so more difficult to roll-lift-lever onto it. My Trixie is like this and surprises Wes whose '71 is sweat to put on center stand and good thing as his has no side stand. I have to give some
initial momentum backwards then press on stand and lift on rear loop to get er up in one try. To get her off the stand on smooth cement it just slides forward till I put a foot in the way to block it. Wes's just falls off the stand like Norton intended. Them DIY conduit jacks only weight a few lbs and fold of flat to slip out the way.

This is the stand I used on my featherbed/Commando race bike. Lke pvisseriii, I turned up some alloy spools to fit on the lower shock mount bolts. I also had make some alloy blocks to space the top of the stand higher. I had a similar setup for my Commando racer, but don't have any pictures of it. The stand is an adjustable item from Lockhart Phillips (LP Racing). I bought it quite a few years ago, so I don't know if they still sell it, but there are plenty of similar stands available.
