I'm sure like a lot of us I go onto E-bay to see if there is anything that might be useful for my bike, whether I need it or not! I have just looked on and there is a '73 850 Commando sitting, with 9 hours to go, at, believe it or not, £6750!, and the bankers, (you can change the first letter if you like!), tell us there is a credit crunch.

It is a nice bike granted, but £6750 and it may go up!
The bike has several non standard bits on it which is fine as
most of us on the forum don't mind some changes to Commando's features , whether it's an upgrade or someone deciding to paint their bike Turkish pink!, but at that price, is that not close to what the rivet counters would ask for a bike that is fully restored right down to the last nut and bolt?
It's two wheels don't match, alloy front and steel rear, it has a nice seat, and a horn that could do irrepairable damage to a pillions rear end!, amongst other things. Don't get me wrong! it's a good looking bike and good luck to the guy if he can get that kind of cash for it.
Are Commandos now starting to get priced out of the normal working class guys hands and a lot of bikes soon to be mothballed for fear of getting it dirty as we have seen happen to other classics?, I for one hope not!

Machines like these by CNW routinely go for $30,000.00 or more:

Yes, I know, but a large % of CNW bikes are custom built for clients and to their specs. This is not a company selling specialised bikes. What I suppose I was trying to say was I was surprised at the price that this bike had reached in the UK market. They have risen by a bit in the last year but nowhere near £6750.

I've been watching that one, and it's certainly way more than I'd expect to pay for a good example, however I've noticed there hasn't been as many Commandos offered for sale recently, both on eBay and in the monthlies.

Apparently many classic bike dealers are having trouble finding bikes to sell at the moment, as people are snapping up classic bikes and cars as investments!

Hi L.A.B. yes I noticed that too, I checked the "completed sale section" and noticed the last few going for £4000 +. If the dealers get hold of a few dear knows what daft prices they would ask. When I was looking I called a dealer down in the south of England, Devon or Cornwall I think, and it was the roadster with the white, blue and red tank ...£6995... I left it!

I would at least expect the pinstriping on the L/H side panel to have been applied the correct way around on a Commando if it was me spending £6,750 (or more  ) .

Any advance on £7,450 for his Rocket 3, anyone?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1971-BSA-A75-Rock ... 240%3A1308

I think he is a dealer as I have seen pictures with the same background before on a couple of Triumphs. Once you buy it there is always the money you have to spend to get it the way you want it, so it could end up a hell of a lot more. That is also a daft price for a Rocket 3! but people are willing to pay it!

Not my cuppa tea. Big brake probably stops well but looks goofy to me. Probably enhances the cafe' image for some buyers. I say, what the market will bring. Some have money, some don't.

yeah i been watching that too. its frustrating seeing the prices go up- for a potential first time classic buyer like i intent to be.

but its still cheaper than A GoldStar or many Bonnies. and id rather have the Norton personally

But i am straying towards an A65 lighting or ThunderBolt as they go for very good prices. But for now i will stick with my suzuki until i can afford a norton or A65 in a year or so. but if the commando prices keep going up i may tack a punt on BSA to get started with a classic.

i have also noticed that Norvil restored bikes are going up monthly. its gone from being a possible choice to being almost silly money (perhaps they are playing on the interest of the new commando)

Hi Brendanq, where abouts are you? I have an A65 Lightning Clubman and I deal with a very nice guy, Bob Price, in Leek in Staffordshire, he restores and repairs A65s only, and will know if there are any for sale etc.
I have never met him personally but have bought spares from him and sent him some. He is a genuine guy, very easy to talk to and deal with, not like some I could name!, he even sent me up a tool to crimp my fuel hose ferrells. If you want a contact number let me know.

Not really expensive when compared to any new motorcycle and not really expensive to ride something your next door neighbor can't buy from the dealer down the street and it is not exactly the same as a factory cookie cutter example, not to mention it has some history and will most likely keep its value rather than depreciate as any new bike does (yes, even Harleys).

I recently paid $10,000.00 for this 1969 Triumph T120R Bonneville which is considered a steal for a museum quality piece such as it is. This bike would fetch $18000. - $20000. in a good economy. Yes, it is true that investors are picking up good quality vintage bikes especially now that prices have fallen (at least in the U.S.)

commando price!!!!!!

commando price!!!!!!

My vintage bikes are frequently ridden as I think all should be. I don't ride them very far but I do ride them.
My wife and I go everywhere by motorcycles but we prefer larger bikes for comfort when going more than 20-30 miles. When riding for sport and entertainment you can't beat a Commando or Bonnie but for longer rides a Rocket III or Goldwing are more comfortable. Mind you, we are in our 60's.

I've just shown my wife the figures, just to covince her that my £300 gearbox rebuild will be cheap at double the price :!: "It's an investment my dear."

well guys i just got to say the price of the commando and rocket 3 are grossly over the top,are these the last two on the planet or is the dealer covering his bases ,ie 6 engine and gearbox blow ups before the warranty runs out, the guys thats put these bids in have obviously fell out with there money

And it's an investment the Bernie Madoffs of this word will not get their grubby hands on :)

Im in hampshire(basingstoke) but yeah sent me a message of the contact number id be very grateful. it will likely be this time next year when i get a classic, my heart is set on a commando but an A65 i think may suit me and my gf perfectly. id be very interested to hear how you get on living with it(motorway cruising, useage etc). my dad had a commando so i have a fair idea of issues and everyday stuff on that. tho im not so clued up about the A65...yet.

Brendanq,
Save your money towards the Commando, buy the A65 if you like visiting your dentist to have your fillings replaced after the Jack Hammer has shaken them out.
Seriously they are as different as chalk and cheese. A commando can be ridden much like a modern naked bike, I have ridden to Scotland and back 1000+ miles in a long weekend I wouldn't consider it full stop on an A65. I think you comment about Lightnings and Thunderbolts going for very good prices says it all. No offence meant to A65 lovers out there but having owned both together and now only the Commando £6750 seems cheap compared to the cost of an A65. :?
