Having now replaced my 2012 Sport with a 2018 Euro 4 version, I though I'd have a look at the air box and filter with a view to carrying out the same airbox mod described on my previous posts. https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/air-box-mod.25030/#post-371819

What I've discovered is that the current filter fitted in now only 75mm (3") long compared to 100mm (4") on the earlier model... this is a significant reduction in area in what is already a restricted airbox!

Does anyone know what the earlier filter was originally designed for, so that I can source it else where?

Obviously this will be useful information for other owners with the same small air filter fitted!

Perhaps lopping an inch off the filter length is a part of avoid oil consumption from the filter lying in any oil in the airbox?

When I spoke to Olivia last year about it, I think she intimated that it was more to do with supply. The longer filter was a good 25mm off the bottom of the airbox, so things would need to be pretty bad to reach the filter material.

Ok, perhaps not the case then.

Ramair sell their filter element material in a kit form, the idea being that you shape it to suit and glue it together. Have you thought about this?

Alternatively, how about fitting some sock filters and dispensing with the airbox altogether ?!

What is wrong with the BMC air filter elment (like K&N) ? I installed earlier this year ; I got the idea from 2Cups after he installed it. I bought it from the UK at R&G products.

The reason we have a smaller filter now is far less exciting - the Dominator needs a smaller filter, as the euro 3 commando filter will not fit in a Domi air box, so we used to use two different sizes. When we went in to euro 4 and sourced a higher quality air filter, it made sense to uniform them across the 961 range. Simple!

It's also marginally cheaper than it's euro 3 counterpart!

The p/n is 983/08 and it is almost 4 inches in length like the pre Euro4 air filter. So , I understand if I was to order an air filter element for my 2014 961 Sport it would be the shorter filter ? Its a no brainer , get the BMC !

The Domi airbox has the room inside , just not enough room to get the filter past frame and engine ?

Hello Rob , Have you actually had a chance to ride the new Atlas ?

I know you know this : A properly designed airbox will perform better than clamp-on air filters . Problem is without back to back dyno testing I will never know and I won't have a place to catch my oil !

True.

But is the 961 airbox ‘properly designed’?

It looks on the small side to my uneducated eyes at least...

I had my previous 961 checked out on the dyno at SPR racing in Nottingham. With long open pipes, cat and standard airbox, the conclusion was that the engine was constrained at the top end. I subsequently removed the cat and opened up the airbox. Unfortunately I never managed to get the bike back on the dyne, but it felt a lot more willing to rev out.

If the shorter air filter has a higher quality material used for the filter, it would be even better at 100mm (less restrictive).

The new bike is already decated and on short open pipes (which sound fantastic), so once in the new year I'll see if I can summon the nerve to once again open up the air box! Thanks for the lead on the BMC filter. I'll have a look at it and decide whether to use one of those or use a K&N again.

That isn't the reason, the euro 3 filters were a rubberised material, which allowed the larger filter to be squeezed up against the relief for the rear shock detail on the domi air box. The euro 4 filter is aluminium, so will not be squeezed, hence why we chose the shorter one.

Personally I think you can have a lot of fun on a commando with standard power, i've clocked 130mph on one before, which is plenty. I think they are great as they are. If you want performance, the sensible thing to do is to buy a Superlight or a V4!

Yes, a Superlight, a V4 or perhaps option #3, a supercharged 961.
Now three options, that's a real selection. I'm just saying...:p

130? Clocked on what? The speedo or a GPS or Radar? I've had my speedo up to 128 with room to spare, but I can tell you, I wasn't even close.
