Hi All,

I'm after a little bit of info that I hope you blokes can help me with.
Could someone out there please tell me the diameter of their Commando exhaust silencer/muffler mounting bobbin/cotton reel or whatever you call them. Also if anyone knows the part number and a good supplier in the UK or Europe it would be very much appreciated. I have to ask as I've had bad experiences in the past with rubber parts :mrgreen:

06-0622 rubber silencer mounting, RGM carries them, I'm sure Norvil, Hemmings, Andover, Burtons Bits they're rather common. Dia. about 29mm. Some are waisted (they are concave around the diameter) and some are not.

I have been told you can use Mini (as in car) exhaust mounts in place of the original Norton ones

If you get them from Mini, they're probably about $30 more. I've seen them in industrial supply houses and on some Siemens post office mail handling equipment.
 
Go to a motor factors like Halfords in the UK (or something similar where you are) and they should be able to supply you with some Mini (old classic Mini) exhaust rubber mounts, cheap as chips and similar to Norton stuff apart from a radiused centre. Bought some for my MK3 years ago and they worked OK.
Sizes - 1 5/16" dia. 3/4" width. 5/16" unf threads. They are about 1/16" wider than Norton rubbers but I can't see that being an issue.

I was thinking about the Mini ones, but I would assume that most that you would find in the local auto parts shop would be metric.
Dog, any suggestions about which ones are best? I see a lot of rubber parts made in India/China (foot rests for example) that don't wear well.

These rubber stud mounts are called Lords Mounts since Lords company invented/developed them. I get mine half the time from Harley vendors but about any work, for a while, even the waisted ones I make or buy done already. Harley brand holds my Combat oil tank off frame. The smaller nicer trimmer you get the more you need to get to have spares on hand.
 
Yes, keep some spares on hand, if one brakes, things will rattle and break. I got some stainless ones from RGM and one of them broke right away. Probably doesn't matter where you get them, as long as they're 5/16UNF.

There's nothing about my wife's 08 Mini Cooper S here in the US that is cheap as chips. Oil change is $90, and every time it goes in the shop it's at least $2000. And because of their secret society computer, you can't work on them without $5000 worth of computer equipment and you can't buy the software. Only thing I can do is the OBDII and that is risky. Then there's the run flat tyres at $250 each plus installation and they last maybe 20K. Don't get me going.

Hey Dave, if the car is out of warranty, I would be looking at a different service company, sounds way to expensive, maybe check around.

Might be better off in the long run with the double female version from mcmaster. You could choose a high strength bolt then.
 
Yeah, but that 3/16" depth would give you about 4/5 threads into it. At least with the studs you get the whole nut on the stud.
 
Where does 'cotton reel' come from? Must be a mill thing?

Now that's cheap as chips.

What is a cotton reel? Maybe we call it a thread bobbin or a spool? Another language difference? Now I've heard of a cotton gin. Nothing to do with alcohol though. It does make a bit of sense though, reel I understand, as in a rod and reel. But why not thread reel? Just the proclivity of the language I reckon.

Gday Webby, Ive seen on the net some stainless steel backed exhaust mounts. Sorry cant remember where, may have been Commando specialities?
