Hey guys,

I am restoring a 1970 750"S". Although the data or VIN plate on the headstock is really beat up you can still see the frame number. I wanted to get a new plate and have it stamped and retain the original with the restoration records. How do you guys usually handle this? Is it best to leave the old plate (this is a concours restoration so that option is none to appealing) or is there someone who will stamp a new plate if proper documentation is provided?

Thanks

It may depend on where you are located as to whether you can take off the old one and fit a new one. Norvil will stamp you one for around $20USD if you supply the old one. You can buy the blank plates for about $10UDS from old britts and other places in the US. I had mine engraved by a jewler for about $18, looks better than stamping, they can match the font pretty good. I kept the old one just for records if anyone wants to see it. I think here in VA they don't care as long as you have a good title and if it matches numbers if they check, but I've never had anyone look at it.

New VIN plates are available from Domiracer several others (including eBay). Some dealers require you to send them your original and they will stamp the new one and keep the old. Most will just sell you the plate and you can stamp your own. There are four different U.S. VIN plates that I am aware of. The 061286 ('68-'70), 061441 ('71), 063247 ('72-'74) and 066580 ('75 Mk3) so make sure you get the correct one for your '70.

They are attached with hammer drive screws

Thanks for the help on where to source the plate.

Did all the data plates have dates stamped on them? The only thing I can make out in the date box on my plate is what I think is a numeral 9. I know that the bike was dispatched on December 5, 1969.

My previous Commando had a date stamp of FEB 1972. Did they do it the same way in 1969?

Here's a pic of my APR 1969 as it was when I took it off.
