Seems you guys have it a bit easier in the States, then again back home our Pink slips are easier too, certainly depends on which state. Not all states have inspections and some states only have inspections for interstate registrations. here in England is mandatory for bikes over 3 years old annually, except for pre 1962 ones which are excempt.

big jim, I know that feeling of sticking a bike on the centre stand and then watch it crumple, happened to my K75 and that was a hell of a weight to get back off the ground to stick on the side stand, the centre stand had cracked and was folding, luckily it didn't just snap and the bike drops. I feel much happier removing the 'S' on the centre stand, it had dug in quite a few times and I just know next time it will chuck me into some danger, been lucky the other times I have managed to regain control or have a safe run off area with no approaching cars.

The chain is only an advisory, if it slack enough to come off the sprockets it would have been a failure.

Juts got to wait now to see if I get the bike back from the insurance or if they have written it off. Fingers crossed!

How does an insurance settlement for crash damage work in the UK?

In the US if a machine is 'totalled' it means the repair/restoration cost would exceed the value of the bike/car/whatever.
So the insurance policy would pay the owner that value and take the broken bike and title to sell as salvage.

OR the insurance can let the owner keep the wrecked bike plus pay 80% of the value in cash.

This method of the owner keeping the wreck makes sense to keep it from an uncaring scrapyard.
Classic or collector interest bikes sometimes can have an agreed on value between owner and insurance writer to help set the policy cost.

I hope you can keep the Norton and have it fixed and back on the road.

I certainly wouldn't want any insurance company working on my bike. I'd just buy it back no matter what.
