Peter Williams told me he thought two brakes were unneccessary and he preferred just one, whilst Read preferred two. Two are like running into a brick wall. I speak from experience. They certainly put a lot of unsprung weight on the front forks. The disadvantage of that is easy to notice in fast, bumpy bends on the track.

The factory used the same slider on both sides, so one caliper pointed forward and one to the rear. The "symetrical" setup was done by Mick Hemmings in the late 1970s, with Peter doing the drawing for him. On the year I am not certain, but it was before 1980, because the non-factory handed one came my way on a used bike I sold on, but kept the slider off, in the early 1980s.
That was years before others, whose name escapes me now, started copying "Norvil" items and claimed they had invented them. And the Norton Commando to put them on with it. Or do I muddle things up? Ah, well, must be my advancing age.....

The twin disc setup, Hemmings style, you can see on http://www.andover-norton.co.uk/Family%20Racer.htm
