Back in 2003 I had my 850 Interstate totally renovated in UK by EEK Racing and shipped to me in Hong Kong. I used it for a few months, then it went into storage and hasn't been used since. It's now time to get it out, dust it off and get riding.

Can I have some advice as to what areas I should be paying attention to for degrading and deterioration. I'm thinking brakes seals/pipes (though they are braided stainless steel), tyres, may be hydrolastics. It's been undercover in my warehouse the whole time.

Depends on what you mean by "storage" Plugs removed and replaced with a little squirt of oil in each cylinder? Fuel system completely drained? Blocked up with weight off the tires? Or just parked in a corner and covered up? Many things can wreak havoc on a stored bike; rubber deteriorates with age and exposure to UV, rodents cause beaucoup damage, changes in weather promote corrosion etc. Some things you will just have to discover as they are revealed.

Hi Danno and thanks for the reply. Yes, just on the main stand and covered in the corner. The warehouse is dehumidified 24/7 and there are no signs of external corrosion. I did notice brake fluid had seeped out of the handlebar reservoir, probably due to summer temperatures here.

Change brake fluid renew all "rubber" brake parts. Stainless brake lines should be fine they are nylon lined check condition of pads an shoes but they should be of modern compound so ok but if in doubt replace.
Change gearbox and engine oil and oil swinging arm pivot. Strip an clean carbs and fuel tank change fuel pipes. Fit new battery an check electric system for faults dew to corroded connections.
After basically a full service poor half a pint to a pint of oil (of the total amount used to refill system) into cylinder head over rockers to lube valves an run down push rods over followers an cam to lube on first start up. This is very important to help prevent damage to the cam.
Then cross fingers an start kicking.

Tyres and tubes should also be changed for safety sake. But i would get engine running first as if nothing else it will be good to motivate you. DON'T BE TEMPTED TO RIDE IT ON OLD TYRES AND BRAKES THOUGH.

Thanks Toppy! You have confirmed my thoughts, and great advise on the oil. Hadn't thought of that. Time to get cracking. Any ideas where I can get new 'original pattern' tyres? Nothing in HK so I'll need to order from UK.
Thanks again!
