Simple question. Is CNW simple the best for engine/tranny rebuild in regard to attention to detail and quality?
I have talked to Matt and I curious if there are any builders that take it to the level that CNW does?

And, unrelated, what do you think of this frame color?

I have visited Matt at CNW and I have purchased a number of parts from him.

He IS first class and I have great respect and admiration for the superb quality of work he does.

Having said that, yes of course there are people who are just as knowledgable and pay just as much attention to detail as he does.

The problem is finding them. CNW is "known", very highly respected, and imho, you pay dearly.
If money is no object for comparable labor done at CNW or elsewhere, then by all means CNW.

My 73 850's motor was getting old and tired and so one year I asked Jim Mosher if he would take my motor and completely rebuild it. Two months and a couple thousand dollars later, he gave me back a magnificent engine,
complete with Megacycle 5600 cam and teflon skirted, ceramic topped pistons, etc etc.

I have no doubt that a number of guys right on this forum do just as "good" of a job on engine rebuilds as CNW does, people like Jim Comstock, Jim Schmidt and Grandpaul, among many others, come to mind.

By the way, that red Norton is drop dead gorgeous!

EDIT: Jim Comstock and Jim Schmidt both are engineers who produce and sell very high quality parts, and it is my understanding now that Grandpaul does not. Therefore, I stand corrected in lumping them together as regards the services they offer.

I know that Matt at CNW installs single Mikuni 34s as standard, along with stock cams, unless otherwise specified.

If I was having Matt build my Commando, I would specify Jim Schmidt's 32mm dual flatslides and a higher lift, longer duration cam. It IS a Norton after all, and the difference in engine responsiveness is dramatic.

CNW is unquestionably ONE of the best. That's why they have a long waiting list!

You know, I could have bought 3 CNW Nortons for the price I paid having stone work done around my house the last 5 years. Insane. I would have loved one of the CNW bikes, but for some reason I just don't like the short shocks and the Harleyesque look to it, not that Matt would not make one to my specs. They're cool looking bikes and I'm sure they run great and forever.

If I weren't so cheap I'd have sent him my stuff. But I did enjoy doing my own work.

Keep it up, we need to keep the good restorers in business.

Yes.

To me, a bone stock commando with a Corbin is about as sexy as it gets. A few other touches and you're good to go!

I can not comment the quality of the rebuilds of CNW from personal experiece, but what I understand is that these guys know teir stuff.
CNW special parts are available over here too (The Netherlands) and are surely quality items.
What I do not understand is that CNW always seem to opt for that lowrider look, this completely spoils the look of the Commando in my opinion.
Of course this may be a personal thing, and maybe this is just what their costomers want, but i think this makes an otherwise perfect Commando looking utterly silly.
The grey frame looks good, but this light colour has its drawback : it will show every speck of dirt after just one ride. this is why BSA dropped their "dove grey" frames afer only one seaon of sale.

VERY,,VERY NICE. :

Apart from thier "spec" cafe racer model, CNW's style is very decidedly low-slung.

From thier waiting list, it's pretty clear that there are more than enough folks that like that look to keep CNW busy till they decide to retire and move to the Bahamas.

Hey Skyguyz, CNW is a quality outfit for sure, if you're gona spend the money might as well check JS Motorsports for his light weight pistons and con rods and radius cam kit etc. And the silver frame is my choice for frame color, but with a green tank and side panels though. Cj
