Next issue to solve. The clutch is dragging in 1st when the bike is cold / just starting out and then clears up after about 15 mins or so of driving. It seems ok when I start it up and shift into first in the driveway but not too friendly at the first few stop signs/lights... it drags as I come to a stop and if i don't flick it into neutral quickly it stalls. After few miles its fine.

What is the cure? Adjustment or is it a sign of gear box oil leaking into the clutch plates and cleaning /fix is required or something else?

regards,

My guess is oil between clutch plates.
I'd give them a good clean in gas.
While in there if you don't have one already I'd put a clutch rod seal on the end of mainshaft.
On refilling primary be very careful to fill only up to level of lower plug in outer cover.

Yep sounds like oil on the plates.
Check the amount of oil that comes out of the Chain case when you drain it.
Should be about 200cc or mls depending on what part of the world you are in, or 7 fl ozs.
If it is much more than that, then you know you have a problem in there.

I agree with all the above, ATF is generally used in the primary, some type are better than others for not sticking the plate together. Norton starting lore is to kick her throught gently with the clutch pulled to break plates. Once the kick no longer turns the engine with clutch pulled you have frred off the plates.

Thanks I guess I'll have to do the seal fix. I had planned to check the layshaft bearing during the winter anyway so free up kick for now. I haven't had the primary open yet, just checked the oil level.
