Put your compression tool on the new spring and tighten it down until you can see the disc flatten a bit. Then assemble the clutch. The trick is that you need to have it flat enough so that the retainer goes in without interference from the clutch disc. You will know when you go to put in the retainer if it needs more.
Old Jaguar pistons work too, but I probably have more of those laying around than most people... Most any piston around 85-90mm with a full skirt would work fine. Some pistons come with holes already in them, too!
