Postie just delivered a 4 pack of these M18 Belleville washers.

Clutch Belleville Washer

It was so long ago that I ordered them I'd kinda forgotten I did  , there again, it was free postage from that country that does a lot of inexpensive manufacturing, so mustn't grumble.

I ordered them because when I fitted the clutch pushrod oil seal, I didn't have enough room for the clutch fixing washer...

...only the tab washer...

I'm off work and was planning to just go for a ride, but I'm tempted to break out the clutch spring compression tool and install the Belleville washer, just for piece of mind. I haven't noticed any issues just having the tab washer, but well, y'know.

What say the panel?

Please disregard the above 👆

It appears the M18 Belleville washers I ordered ages ago are a fitment option for when the Alton goes in, not the clutch.

Sigh. Of all the things I've lost, its my memory I miss the most

I have a push rod seal on the end of the mainshaft...and have room for this washer that will not ever unintentionally come undone...no need for loctite or a lock tab washer or top washer...I think ? 🤔
I have mentioned/reccomended this before....Nord-Lock washers....for piece of mind...they are the shit...đź‘Ť

There has been some discussion here on Belleville clutch washers, I learned (here and the hard way ;-) that they don't serve well as lockwashers, my clutch came loose but I haven't had any problems since I also used blue threadlocker along with the washer. The problem with the tab washer in my experience is that being soft (of necessity) they get thin under pressure and then the clutch nut gets loose.

I've lost count on the amount of times I've seen/heard of this common issue/ problem...bugger having to carry a clutch spring compressor ...in the case of "just n case"
No comment on the Belleville washer...never bothered/tried...but would have to be better than the stock set up...

If you want a washer that really locks things up, you need Nord Locks.

However, they are two piece, so rather thick for the clutch application.

(Blue Loctite!)

I was slightly skeptical prior to using them ... but everything fitted up just fine ..including a push rod seal...

Here's one of my off topic comments. Feel free to shoot the messenger

That looks like an RGM clutch. You like? I'm really on the fence about mine after some more use.

Back on topic. I don't consider myself qualified to be on the panel, but it doesn't stop me from typing. I would use one of the washers shown, but my nut torque spec is a little higher on a pre-Commando mainshaft. I am currently foolishly relying on the tab washer and 65ft lbs of torque. I'm also even more foolishly using the RGM clutch rod seal nut to hold the clutch on the mainshaft. Bombs away.

Just fitted M16 Nord Locks to mine after the nut came loose 15mi from home.

Its not the perfect solution as these washers need more torque according to the specs on their website which cannot be achieved with against the clutch basket circlip which can only safely take 30-40ftlbs.

Reading their website the Nord Locks don't work well against hardened surfaces such as the hardened clutch centre, but must be a better solution than the soft locking tab washer.

It was an interesting ride home at 20mph or less, with the clutch basket being held in place by the rotating belt. I didn't change out of second all the way and was lucky to not encounter any red stop lights on the journey home.

You are all good and no fool mate...my clutch is a bitza...RGM alloy pressure plate...Barnett fiction plates...CNW clutch centre...can't remember the brand of the original maker of the belt ...but the kit but was purchased in 1989-90 ...the times I've personally seen/fixed up these nuts that have come loose was after 3-4 hours ride/use away from home (not convenient)....ive used ring spanners and river stones to remove that diaphragm spring so we could tighten things up again for a mate in need on the side of the road years ago....and yes its happened to me twice over the years....
