Took off the primary, and when I pull the clutch lever the whole clutch sprocket-basket moves outward about a half-inch.
I read something in here one time that seemed to describe that as normal, but I can't find it now and am concerned.
Any thoughts?

Umm.. the only thing that should move is the clutch diaphram spring. The clutch assembly is attached to the gearbox mainshaft which is anchored to the gearbox inner cover. It hadden't aught to move.

The most likely cause is that the clutch centre nut has come loose on the mainshaft. This could be as a result of the circlip behind failing.

Do you have a spring compressor so that you can have a look ? - You're going to need one sooner or later so not a bad idea to buy or make one straight away.

Happened to me in the midst of the Poconos when the bike was brand new. Went to pull in the clutch and it went right to the handlebar. On mine the mainshaft nut just came loose.

hi dan,i agree with the others ,its either the clutch center nut thats loose or the circlip on the mainshafts gone awol

Second that. Do not attempt any clutch investigation without one!

If your circlip has failed remember on reinstallation only tighten the nut to 40 ft lb. (put a dab of locktite on the thread as well). The manual states 70 ft lb. It is wrong!!!
The circlip fails at 70 ft lb

Classic sympton to keep in mind if the clutch goes out of adjustment quickly whilst riding stop and check or it can get messy...
