Just fitting an alton starter, the instruction mentions check the sprocket alignment and don't rely on what the PO did. So i checked it and found i needed to remove the shim. So now apart from the circlip washer there is nothing behind the basket. Now i'm starting to doubt myself. Is it acceptable to have no shim at all?

At a minimum, the Clutch Location Spacer 060747 (thick, with a recess to engage over the mainsheet circlip) has to be present between the clutch and the mainsheet circlip. If the gearbox gaskets were omitted, then potentially fewer or no Clutch Location SHIMS may be required, but under normal circumstances, with the gaskets in place, it would be unusual not to need at least one or two shims there.

Hi no got the usual thick circlit spacer on. I think i'll take it all off again and check the alignmend again. It's not the easiest thing to check are they?

Keep the thick circlip spacer but the shims are there to get it right by adding or taking the shims off for the right alinement some come from the factory with 3 shims some with less shims and some without shims at all, not all are the same, so shim it till its right for your bike, maybe you don't need to shim at all, each Norton is different.
