hi all . ken here ,a question for you.what is the clunking noise i hear coming from the front forks when i take it off the center stand, when the front forks return to normal positon after being depressed'is this normal if not what do i need to fix....thanks o yea it' a 72 750 commando roadster....

G'day Ken,
That's the normal sound of Low fork oil. If the oil hasn't been changed for a while and perhaps some
has leaked out via the seals, I would drain the Oil and refill with fresh. If you have badly leaking seals,
you have a job to do one day. The correct fork oil ? will create a debate. Probably Auto trans fluid
is the most readily avaliable ( 10 wt. I think ) or any Bike shop will have a selection of Fork oil.

Get a chair and some popcorn!, the "fork-people" are going to have fun with this.
I'm a Landsdowne Engineering-guy myself.

One clanking not mentioned but from behind is when silencer baffle tubes fracture loose, but its no mystery where its coming from.

Clonking when "dropping off centre stand" is not normaly a damper noise, unless its come loose! placing the bike on the stand is damper related Could be a fork slider/bush problem...look for something worn or loose..or sloopy brake pads. Even a slack bottom fork bush as been known to do this. see prev threads

Before modifying my forks, I used 20W fork oil with good results. 10W would be a bit light for a stock fork, methinks. But it's easy enough to experiment and see what works best for you.

Hi

20W is the standard oil in the forkes, thats what my Norton book said anyway, I used 10W before and was no good to light.
