In forth gear if I go on and off the throttle I hear a clunking noise. If I look down I can see the engine moving forwards and backwards about 5mm by watching the primary case and Z plate. I can also feel the clunking through the foot pegs. All engine bolts are tight and the ISO's have all been replaced and shimmed correctly.
I also feel the same clunking if when on the overrun goping over rough pavement. I've had the rear wheel out and checked the swinging arm but there is no movement. Any suggestigns on what this might be? Thanks. Ross

Hi again
chains slack/tight.Have set primary chain by the book/

Headsteady is the orginal commando unit with the 2 rubber bushes (same as exhaust rubbers) threaded into the frame. All is tight with new rubbers fitted.
Both primay and secondary chains are adjusted correctly.
What I hear is a real clunk as though something large is loose and moving forwards and backwards against something hard.

I was thinking along the same lines as Ludwig. Put the bike on the center stand, put it in gear and rotate the back wheel forward and back and see if you can feel where the clunking is. It will most likely manifest itself with something breaking if you don't find it.

If the motor trans. unit is moving in relation to the frame it must be in the iso's, You said your sure the engine bolts are all tight? Check to be sure the iso bolts are also tight, If the chain is going slack and then tight something has to be loose. Double check all.

If the engine is moving around by that much, then the rear of the primary drive case would amost certainly be hitting the Z-plate.

The rear wheel damper blocks are new.

I have tightend the iso's to 25ft lb. Should they be tighter?

The primary to Z plate gap is not very big (what should it be?) so maybe the primary is hitting it? Hard to tell when riding along!

How would i adjust things to avoid this?

Thanks for all the help. Ross
