Clunking Forks

I think I need to make something clear , There is no issue with the Lansdowne Dampers regarding the clunking
It is the forks with endfloat on the steel lower fork bushing ,between the circlip and the shoulder on the stanchion.
Its not to noticeable on forks with standard internals. The Lansdowne dampers bring to light some of the problems
inherit with the standard setup, one being the bottom bushing having to much endfloat allowing the bushing to
bang up and down when the forks change direction at full compression, You may think that .010" or .015" endfloat
wouldnt cause an issue but it does. Loctite the bushing before fitting the circlip so the bushing cant move.

Thanks Don. By the way I have your Landsdowne kit but have not installed it yet. I'll follow your instructions.

Sorry Don - my earlier comment was my misunderstanding. Thought you meant the bushing that the stanchion slides through - wouldn't make sense to loctite that to the stanchion!
Cheers
Rob

Don, I have your dampers installed and I get the "clunk" on the rebound, (but, I'm pretty sure before topping out), as you say, when the direction changes, but from compression to rebound. Would this fit in with your solution? It does not seem to affect performance. It doesn't happen in the other direction change, i.e. changing from extension to compression. i would add that it's only audible on the side with the compression damper.

yes I would say it most certainly is. When you pump the forks you will hear the clunk when the forks start to come back up.

Yep, that's what happens. Appreciate the info. Hadn't gotten around to trying to figure it out, and now I'll know what to look for.
Thanks, Ed Walsh

FWIW my 850 clunked on centerstand or topping out on certain bumps as OEM but after installing Fauth fork mod, no more clunk under any conditions plus much improved damping/handling. No changes made to attaching anything in the fork internals.

that is why I posted the problem and the fix
My brevity once again belied me.
I was simply confirming this is not an isolated issue, but rather, one that occurs when the fork is modified and now that bushing has more hydraulic force acting upon it.
Thank you for sharing the information.

yes, exactly, this is the task I'm faced with when people say "the noise wasnt there before" so it must be faulty Lansdowne dampers.
An addition to the instructions....

It very well may, but the noise will be enhanced with Lansdowne dampers. The clunk on the centerstand may be the forks
bottoming out at full extension
Joe czech its annoying but no it wont affect the performance or do any damage
Thanks Don. Now I can just worry about all the other noises the bike makes. Maybe someone should publish two lists - noises that are normal and noises to worry about.

Huhhh ? What noises? All I hear is the sound coming out the pea shooters. Sweet bliss!
