Hi Folks,

I have been researching rear sets for my 72 and 74 Commandos. I think I have it narrowed down to the Clubman Racing product. Here is the link:

http://www.clubmanracing.com/rearsets.php

I was hoping that those who have them could give me some feedback.

Also, I would appreciate any recommendations for other rear sets. I do not want the CNW rear sets because they reverse the shift pattern.

I would prefer that the rear sets are situated at about the same position as the passenger pegs, nothing too extreme.

Thanks much!

I got my set some years ago from Old Britts but they are like the Clubman set. They have obviously changed since then.

The ones from Clubman, which look identical to mine, work great. The are surprisingly light yet quite stiff with a positive feel. I do not feel any flex. The brake switch and cable transfers without issue. The shifter can be tweak to clear any interference issues you may come across.

Here is the catch, the MKIII kicker, if you are using one, will interfere and the stock kicker is needed.

I recommend the Clubman unit. If i had to get another, that is what i would get.

The ones Unclviny is showing look really good too, $80 more though and maybe a bit heavier.

I've been using the Clubman's on my '73 850 for 20 something years. Other than the rear brake sucks, I have no complaints. Seem well made. I suspect they are actually from RGM.

The rear brake issue I believe is because the lever is shorter that the stocker, and therefor less leverage. I'd like to see a conversion to a rod actuated set up.

The Triton set look interesting, the rear brake cable holder looks more substantial than the one on the Clubman's set. I might try a set on the next bike I build, especially if I see some feedback from users.

I was told that the MK3 kick lever would work with the clubman style rearsets.? I actually started a thread about it. mk3-kickstarter-and-rearsets-t17941.html I was about to buy an MK3 kicker.... so now I'm wondering.

A few years age you could have purchased mine because it did not work with these rearsets. There was no point in keeping it along with the rest of the foot peg hardware.

The one thing I don't like about those rear sets is the hex head bolt on the end. I think it looks cheap. I'd have to replace it with a button head allen at the very least. Otherwise it looks fine.

I HAD to get one for the clearance.

Well there ya go. You just don't know till it's in your hands.

Here's a couple views of mine. I think it shows how well it clears. But god knows it can be totally different for someone else.

I've had the Clubman set on for a year now.
Overall I'm pleased with the result - the quality is fine, the price was ok, but I do have a couple of issues:
(1) took a fair amount of fiddling about to get the (rear) brake switch to work properly.
(2) rear brake action not great and although I also don't use the rear brake much, I need it for stability and trail braking. Shortening the cable improved the action a little, think there's more to improve here.
(3) still not convinced the gear lever position is optimal, but one spline either way is wrong and no more adjustment in the rod.
(4) have an Interstate tank and Dunstall seat which makes it a bit of a contorted seating position. I think a standard tank would be much better.

Flashbackk,
I can't say which one works better, but they both look fine to me. This is what i believe, Flashbackk, yours would not work with the old kicker and mine wouldn't work with the new. I truly believe this. I can't say why but i know what I know and have no reason doubt you.

Squarehead, what are you going to do?

I bought a set of the Norvil rearsets and have been very happy with them. Very well made and they work well. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of them on the bike but here they are after unpacking. Quality stuff.

Now I just need to figure out how to run the brake light switch!!

I am not sure how to take the double rolling eyes, and I surely was not arguing. I think the only thing settled is that there a few if any absolutes with these darn bikes.

whooooooooooooo..... no offense intended.

gee I didn't even know we were arguing......

I spent less than one second choosing the emoticon. I thought I was being funny.

Sorry, a little gun shy, I guess.

What about getting a Venhill cable with the inline switch? I bought one for the rearsets I have (I think they are 80s old britss/hemmings) because I hate the little switch that always comes to pieces...havent put it on yet tho.

Or Norvil sell a cable with inline switch to match their rear sets, but it doesn't jump out at you from the website.
I didn't do my homework and ended up buying the cable a week after the rearsets, 2 x postage to NZ was a bit of a pain in the pocket.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I am going to give the Clubman's a try. Will let you know how they work.
