Chaps,
My 1974 mk2a has the deep clock pods with the step near the bottom to allow the rubber cap to fit over.
Can someone tell me what the actual difference is between short and deep clocks?
Similar question regarding the pods, it looks to me that cutting my long pods off where the step is would give me short pods, is it that simple or are there other differences.
I prefer the look of the short pods, and am just trying to figure out what would be involved in changing over.

No, it isn't that simple, the longer pods were introduced because the Veglia instruments are somewhat deeper than the Smiths.
Smiths instruments then need adaptors (same parts as the points plate pillar bolts) to mount them in the deeper pods. If you were to machine off the "step" then that would also remove the internal mounting lugs.

I broke one of my long pods and I got 2 new short pods from RGM, they aren't that expensive, they look good as well.

You're right about sawing off the mounting brackets lab (of course)!
I've got Smiths clocks that are about 1.5" deep, and use the stud extensions in the deep pods. Does this mean I cold use stock shallow pods with these clocks?

Splendid! In that case I will. I've never liked the big pods.
